Default I really hate over heating problems...

I was driving out in a country road, and I'm doing fine for about 10 miles - then suddenly my heat starts to SLOWLY creep up. I find out that the auxillary hose from the thermostat that ultimately runs to the heater core has a half in diameter hole in it. So i run to GI joes and grab the hose and fix it. Problems solved right?

Wrong.

Now that i have that hose fixed and I filled up the coolant level, I'm still having overheating issues but now when it starts to over heat I turn off the car and everything is quiet I can hear a hiss from the top of the engine block underneath the intake manifold.

I check it out (I haven't had the chance to shine a flashlight down there yet) and I notice water collecting in a couple of the crevices on top of the block. I can see air/steam blowing out into the water pooling there but i'm still not sure where it's coming from. My first thought is that it's blowing out of the coolant plenum that runs over the top from the radiator to the back of the block? But like i said I can't tell without a flashlight in there.

I know that it's not the head becuase i can clearly see that the water isn't coming from there, and I know that it's coming from somewhere in that area because when I let the car cool down it evaporates but when it overheats and I shut it off, more water has collected there and again I need to throw more water in the radiator - even after it's taken from the resevoir.

Any ideas?

~Mike

While the EJ22 2.2 motors arent well known for suffering headgasket failures, it does sound as if *maybe* you have just experianced one.

How hot did the motor get before you noticed the problem ?

I refuse to say that your engine block has any sort of a crack in it.

during the drive that i noticed the overheating it didnt get more than the top of the icon but i think that it was a pocket of air that was being read because i would let it set and cool down...turn the key a few min and it would be pegged at the top. the scary thing is that im no more than a month and a half recovering from hg replacement.

wtf, this is the second EJ22 (posssible headgasket) problem I've read about today.

I'm not driving my car for a week!

Although...you do or don't have an EJ22? I know you've been doing a lot of turbo stuff, but is it the original engine?

I had to replace my thermostat, because I was having the same issue. Some days, it'd be okay, others it'd get hot at the most random times. I notice since I installed it, the temp gauge seems to fluctuate a lot more, but never goes higher than half way.

Okay, so i went out and took some pictures of the engine so i can describe where all of this is happening.

This is from the rear of the engine on the passenger side looking under the intake manifold.

Just under the bolt that is there under the intake manifold is one of the two spots where water is collecting when my engine is over heating. You can still see a little bit of moisture in this pic.

When i turn the car off i can see air pushing into the water there but i can't tell where it's coming from. It sounds like a quiet hissing but it's still loud enough to notice when I turn the car off and question what it is.

This is from the front of the engine on the driver side looking under the intake manifold, and that's the oil dipstick tube running vertically on the left side of the pic. Just like on the other side of the engine i can hear a hissing but it's more difficult to tell where the water is collecting on this side and where the sound is coming from.

The night that i noticed all of this i saw a puddle of what smelled like what collecting under the car in a slow but consistant drip, so I grabbed a flashlight and checked under the car to see where it was coming from.

There is a slow but steady drip that is coming from the timing cover bolt on the left in this pic, I wiped it away to see if it was really dripping and sure enough another drip collected there shortly after i wiped it off.

I couldn't really ID where the drip was coming from but i know that it was dripping from somewhere and it was steady enough to concern me and it's origin.

Ideas?...I'm thinking that it may be the O-rings on the top of the block for the coolant passage but again, until I tear into it-i won't know for sure.
