Talking FMIC, TMIC, Exhaust Cutout, etc

Well today, a group of us, Dan (silver WRX), me (blue WRX), Aaron and Rob installed a TurboXS Front Mount Intercooler on Dans car, and a TurboXS/ Hyperflow Top Mount on my car.
Took about 5 hours or so for the FMIC. Most of the time was spent trimming the bumper to fit ...grr

Enjoy the pics,

bumper trimming

Top to bottom: Stock WRX, Hyperflow/TXS TMIC, TXS FMIC:

and my new Top Mount:

And I also got my exhaust cutout rewelded so it is closer to the car and doesn't hang so low. I had a custom heatshield welded onto the dump tube, and had a skidplate welded to the bottom so the flange won't catch on anything
Then I coated the entire outside of it with high-temp BBQ paint to protect the welds from rust!

Damn that was fast Chris.

Im the silver WRX with the FMIC being installed.

There is a lot of material that has to be trimmed. I still have more to do so the bumper fits perfect.

Car feels great, pulls hard and has no lag difference. Cant wait to get tuned.

I like that cutout idea. At what point along the exhaust system did you place the cutout at? From the pics, it looks like right after the final cat, but I can't really tell for sure.

with the cut out can that cause any internal engine damage such as warped valves or anything...... reason asking because i know on an na motor no exhaust can screw up an engine..... but i know turbos are different.

Yep its a TurboXS. Didnt want to risk anything with an Ebay IC. Atleast if something were to go wrong, TurboXS has a good reputation and can help me out.

Endtanks arent polished they were shiney because they were new and its aluminum.

No. I run the same tune for both on mine. I'll see a little less boost with it closed however.

thats cool, what brand is it? would you get it again or try a different one?

i would love to do this, i like the sleeper effect so you can feel the difference between open and closed i'd assume? you still running stock exhaust back?

do you have any more pics of how yours is set up exactly?

Good stuff guys. That FMIC looks great! Your top mount looks cool too Chris

As one of the guys that was one of the first to run this on his WRX... you can tell a diff. when it's open... better spool, better top end, you can feel it in the butt dyno. They are awesome... but tend to leak over time. Not a big deal though.

My exhaust setup is: Borla Header > Helix UP > ERZ DP w/ BadlanzHPE Cutout > Tanabe 3" Mid Pipe > STi Axle Back

On the dyno you will typically see a 15-25whp difference with the cutout open vs. closed. Boost comes on quicker and holds longer with it open. The difference is night and day.

Would I do it again?
On my daily driver, NO. On a project car, YES. They do require maintanence and do leak over time. If you drive around in salty or wet conditions, the motors in the cutouts will corrode. The noise is really cool at first but will murder your ear drums. If you are interested in doing this, try to find someone in your area that has it done. Go for a ride, ask them questions, and see if its for you. The attention and noise is definetely not for everyone.

Im sure you can polish the endtanks if you wanted to but that will take a lot of sanding and time. I was just saying that my endtanks were not polished, they just looked that way becasue it was new.

Get two PVC end caps and drill one of them and screw in an air valve. Take another cap and place it in the throttle body coupling, sealing the IC piping, and take the first cap, with the valve, and place it in the turbo inlet. Unplug the crankcase breather line(the one that goes from the intake to the metal tubing that ran along the front of the stock IC) and plug it, I used a AA battery.

Fill the system with air and spray each joint with soapy water. A leak should present itself with lots of bubbling.

I almost never close my cutout, unless its nighttime and people are sleeping.
I like the noise, even cruising on the highway.

I got my cutout system from BadlanzHPE.com, fix the leaks ... um, mabye use an RTV gasket maker and put it around the flange where it closes?

Id do it again, I LOVE being loud

RTV isn't gonna help on the cutout leaks. Nothing will really help. MAYBE that new memory switch from QTP will help since it can NEVER overtorque the motor but that's expensive and defeats the purpose of a this cheap solution.
