Default headers+tmic, XPT vs pro tune?

e-bay top mount and Gruppe-s headers going on this weekend. Currently running AP stg2. I know there are a lot of other factors in play, but in general what kind of gains would I be looking at having my car pro tuned vs just running the current AP vs an openECU map from Xpt?

I data log quite often but have no egt or a/f gauge, would it be a stretch to do just a little bit of tweaking with the tables in openECU and get good, safe results or is compensating for those mods way more involved than just adjusting a few points in a table or two?

well off the shelf maps from cobb are lean.
but headers actually make your car run rich.

if you have no way of telling what your engine
is doing, guages, why would even tweak?
not to mention no wide band o2..
openecu should have monitoring abilities, datalogs.
but you would be better off getting your tuned.

where did you get this from?

generalizations like this are bad and untrue.

back to the OP's original question- headers may range from making your car run not ideally to causing knock. i would recommend putting all of the parts on the car and then getting it tuned properly.

How comfortable are you with reading your logs?
You can do it man...just research a whole bunch and get good at reading your logs.

I would read the thread about the XPT maps in the stock ecu forum and draw your conclusions. I haven't used them so I can't say first hand how they work, but I do not agree with the tuning philosophy used for them.

Also, how much is a protune or an AP? You could buy the gauges for close to the same coin.

I have no EGT or AFR gauges, but I wouldn't recommend that unless you are real confident reading the logs and understanding what is going on.
Even then, if I blow it up, it'll be my own damn fault and I know it!

Plus, if I weren't so cheap, I really would LIKE to have said gauges.

It was my understanding ots Cobb maps were way rich? This was part of their safety margin for a, "one size fits all", map. Am I wrong on this? Will adding the headers richen up the a/f's? Please explain how.

I use tari to log,(openecu), and compare my current logs with the maps in Enginuity. I always see max or almost max ign. correction allowed. This leads me to believe I have room to grow, does this seem logical? We have straight 93 and I add 10% ethanol to that, so it should slightly raise the octane. The only thing I've seen after logging for eight months that concerns me is high injector duty cycles, I hear this is common with AP stg2 and STI's though, a Walbro will be going in soon, this should help a little with the IDC's. Before getting a tune or trying some small tuning myself, I will keep a close eye on the logs.

I researched before buying the Gruppe-s headers, deciding to buy them after the header comparison thread from RainMaker. As far as I know there was no protune with any of his comparisons, just the basic AP stg2. As far as I could tell, he had no problems, (engine wise), with any of the headers or manifolds he tested, however I am aware this can vary from car to car.

Still wondering, what kind of hp will I be leaving on the table- AP stg2 I am currently running or XPT's soon to be released sti map vs protune by a reputable tuner. If it's just 10hp, then I'm saving my five bills. If it's 25hp or more, then I need to make an appointment.

Trying to learn, not dissing anyone. Feed me.
