Default 50th Anniversary Elfin Streamliner

50th Anniversary Elfin Streamliner

Elfin supercharges Holden heart

Boutique sports car maker Elfin boosts its V8 with performance capable of blitzing Ferraris and Porsche, reports GLENN BUTLER.

Boutique sports car maker Elfin has announced plans for a supercharged V8 version of its lightweight Streamliner sportscar. The 50th anniversary model will have the most powerful Holden V8 ever seen in an Australian production car, and be capable of accelerating faster than any Ferrari or Porsche production car ever built.

The engine is a 5.7-litre V8 used by previous generation Holden and HSV Commodores, supercharged for around 350kW and 660Nm. It will go into one of five limited edition Streamliner sports cars produced to celebrate Elfin's 50th anniversary in 2007.

Elfin spokesman and HSV CEO Chris Payne says the limited edition Elfin Streamliner will have the power-to-weight ratio of a V8 supercar, and be capable of sprinting from 0-100km/h "in the 3-second bracket".

“This car is a good example of the benefits of technology sharing between Elfin and Walkinshaw Performance, which has launched a range of premium enhancement products. We had this synergy in mind when we bought Elfin last year.”

All five special edition models will be painted a unique gold colour called "Garrie Cooper Gold" after the Elfin founder. They feature a bonnet scoop and cabin hardtop designed by ex-Holden designer Mike Simcoe who penned the Streamliner.

The Streamliner will be launched at the Melbourne motor show tomorrow with a price tag of $128,500.

In other Elfin news, Chris Payne says export plans are well under way with two evaluation vehicles already in the UK.

Payne said "Elfin’s point of difference in the UK market was its big V8 power, producing supercar-like performance. UK deliveries are expected to begin in time for the European summer."

"It’s the beginning of the process to make Elfin an international sports car brand," he said. "By 2008, we would hope to be exporting more vehicles than we sell domestically.”
