Default Disable All-Wheel Drive on Automatic Transmissions??

I was browsing the internet today looking for a remote starter for my car(does anyone know of a good aftermarket brand??) when I ran into this information on a subaru site, stating if a fuse is inserted in the FWD box under the hood(may be found in the regular fuse box as well) the all-wheel drive is turned off. I wanted to know if anyone has heard of this and if it really works? If it does work it seems like a great way to save gas, by only running the car in front wheel drive. If anyone knows anything, either way about the subject please let me know.

I tried to post the link, but i do not have enough replies, will try to get the link up asap or e-mail or message me for link....

Thank You

That is only for use while towing, and is not intended for long term use.

Only works on certain Subaru's. The WRX, for example, does not have that feature.

Why would it save any gas? It's not removing the weight of the AWD compoents, it's not even keeping them from rotating. All it's doing is keeping power from being sent to the rear driveshaft/axles/wheels.

I'm not even sure how it would do that, seeing as the two are mechanicall connected. The only thing I can think of is that the autos sometimes have a DCCD type LSD in the center diff (Obviously without the Driver Controlled part), which I'm guessing this disables in order to lock the diff in the open position. As far as I know, there is no way to disconnect a mechanical linkage by removing a fuse.

And it wouldn't save gas whatsoever, as was stated above what increases gas milage is the increased weight, which would still be there, and the extra friction from the extra axel/rear diff, which would still be rotating even if you somehow disconnected the center diff.

That fuse is only for automatic non-turbo models to switch to fwd. If you read the bit in the owner's manual.
