Default Engine supposed to turn off when EcuFlash reads ROM?

The engine has to be running when you start EcuFlash, right? When it's in idle (green test connectors connected) and I do a read ROM from EcuFlash the engine shuts off. I can still read and write a ROM but i was just wondering if this was normal.

Another thing. After I rewrite a ROM and disconnect the green connectors, the car won't start immediately when turning the key. It'll make that noise like it's supposed to when the key is turned but the engine won't come on. When i stop and try it a second time, the engine starts fine. Does everybody experience this also?

I'll admit, I was too lazy to do a search for this. Please redirect me to a thread of similar subject if there already is one. Thanks.

No. The engine shouldn't be on. The key should only be turned 1 click so that the accessories are powered, that's it.

The fuel pump bleeds back to the tank during reflash. Just disconnect the green test connectors, turn the key all the way on without cranking and leave it for about 5 seconds. Your car will start right up.

IIRC when you reset the ECU like doing a reflash or pulling the battery, the ECU needs to check and reset some sensors (such as the DBW throttle body). You are probably turning off the car after reflashing, disconnecting the green connectors and trying to fire that bad boy up. Instead, try turning the key on, wait 5 seconds and then crank it.

I don't know if it's different for other years, but my 04 requires the key to be in the RUN position, not ACC.

You need the ignition key to be turned to Start to allow the connection to ECU to happen. Do not start the car if you're planning to read the ROM off the ECU. Once you are done flashing, you need to turn the ignition to off position to get the ECU out of test mode. Disconnect the connnectors, turn the ignition on and the car will start right up. You can't just flash, leave the key in the same position and try to start the car. The ECU will not allow it.
