Default UTEC and Cobb stage 2?

I have an early version of the Cobb stage 2 reflash on my 04 WRX with an unequal length header, uppipe, catless DP, turboXs catback, pulley, k&N short ram, and one step hotter NGK's. I plan to get a bigger turbo soon but want to start with purchasing a UTEC, obviously for the flexibility verses the off the shelf style Cobb maps. My question is if I will be able to piggyback the UTEC to my Cobb staged 2 ECM using the stage 2 as my base with and without the stock turbo? What are my options?

if you have a cobb you can store 5 maps so why mess with the utec? both can have custom maps made by you or a tuner. i say keep the cobb, get a turbo w/ supporting mods and then get a protune.

I only have a reflash. Not an Accessport.

The answer to your original question is yes, you can still use the UTEC and use the Stage 2 map as a base.

May I ask why you only have a flash and not the AP itself?

Or was it OpenECU Flash or Ecutek?

Before the AP you had to mail your ECU to be reflashed.

he said he has a cobb reflash so he must have used open source to copy it. thats the best way to go.

Have you had any experience with this type of tuning personally? Just want to be sure, I called Cobb and they were unsure as well as a few other members I have chatted with.

And the reason I don't have an AP is because before 2004 Cobb offered a reflash service called AccessECU which was basically an off the shelf map which was physically written onto my stock ECM.

my buudy has a ecutek flash combined with utec so i dont see why it wouldnt work. when the utec is on the stock map setting the car is only gloing off the ecutek reflash. his other utec maps are for good gas and nos.

How often is the UTEC on the stock map setting? The problem is that not only is the map an early generic one for non CA gas but since having the reflash I have added a K&N SRI, Perrin pulley, and unequal length header. After reading Unibombers faq regarding the Accessport these mods are doing nothing for my car, thus my need for a UTEC.

About the only thing the stock ECU will be used for is the low load and idle. After the UTEC is in control what is on the stock ecu won't matter. Since you didn't change injectors the Utec Stage 2 base map should be ok to start with.

so you are wanting a utec to compensate for your flash being wrong for your car? since you live in bay area they are plenty of tuners who can flash it for your current mods. if you have the correct flash put on you could use the utec(if you still wanted it) to run gas maps.

Thats exactly why I want a utec. Just want to get max potential from my car and also learn/play with tuning. Eventually I'll get a bigger turbo and hopefully I can tune it myself.

Are the gas maps you're reffering to100 octane, alcohol injection, etc?

exactly^

have you thought about a tactrix cable? you could flash over your old cobb and still tune it yourself. the learning curve is very close to utec. if you are initerested in learning you should meet some locals in your area who have experience and have them show you the ropes.

Sorry but IMO the learning curve for the stock ECU is about 10X harder than a Utec.

you might be right although most of our local boys that have cables are former utec self tuners and picked it up with no problems.

UTEC is a little easier like Street Tuner I believe....Open ECU/Enginuity is a littler harder....its easier to get a good idea of tuning with Street Tuner or UTEC which in turn makes it easier to learn to use Enginuity......

It takes a lot of reading and stuff to work with Enginuity....im still slowly learning from reading and working with a local member who knows quite a bit....plus i did some minor tuning of 4 stroke turbo snowmobiles
