Default [Progress Log] ATMINSIDE's 2015 WRX Limited

Hey all, just bought my 2015 WRX Limited 6MT with Nav, keyless, and Harmon Kardon about a month ago and the modding has started. It had ~13,300 miles when I signed the papers, I'm the third owner. A previously Certified car, I bought it private party. This is a long term vehicle for me, as with all I buy, having driven my previous car (2003 RSX Type-S) for just a hair under seven years.

Now I'm about to trip 14,000 miles and just sent payment today for an Accessport.

Mods on the vehicle at purchase:
2012 STi wheels (same as 2016/2017 Premium and Limited wheels)

Mods thus far:
- 2017 OEM Subaru WRX Homelink Autodimming Mirror (much less frame than the 2015/2016)
- Gorilla Black Locking Lug Nuts
- OEM Subaru emblem center caps to replace the STi center caps
- LED interior and license plate lights
- Cobb Accessport (10/30/2016)
- Boomba Short Shifter (12/30/2016)
- Perrin Shifter Bushing (12/30/2016)
- Perrin Shifter Stop (12/30/2016)
- GCS Striker and Hinge Covers (12/30/2016)
- Subaru Cargo Hook (12/30/2016)
- AC Blower Motor Noise Fix (2/16/2017)
- Husky All Weather Floor Mats (2/24/2017)
- Cobb BigSF Intake (3/4/2017)
- JDM Console Hood - Red Stitching (3/9/2017)

I'll continue to update this thread as I progress on the car. Here's one pic from the day I picked it up, more will come later!

Almost forgot, I also added a TapTurn blinker module.

Here's some before/after of the center caps and lug nuts.

Some raw material was just delivered, any guesses what it'll be?

Finished up the design of the shift knob. It will be black anodized aluminum with the Subaru logo on top laser etched to show silver through the anodizing.

According to Creo, based on standard density of 6061 aluminum, the weight of this shift knob should be approximately 340g. A huge improvement (to me) from stock.
Most of this weight is picked up by an increase in height over the factory knob of ~1.25" but this will soon be offset by installing a Boomba short shifter, which drops the shifter height by about 2" according to their specs.

Reverse lockout functionality is retained in this design, once confirmed everything with this shift knob is fitting properly I will post the design.

Got the Accessport installed tonight! Here's the datalog from my first drive with it installed.

Only thing I can't figure out is why it doesn't show AFR... any ideas?

Update on the shift knob, it has been machined! Now it needs to have the drilling, tapping, and counterbore completed.

Drilling, tapping, and counterbore are complete. Anodizing is also done.
I need to finish out the file for the laser etching tonight, it should get done and be on the car by this weekend.

I'm thinking it'll be like the old baseball movie... "if you build it, they will come" haha!

Thanks though, I appreciate it. This year is like waiting for Christmas was as a kid... I'm anxious as can be to see what car parts show up.

Got the test fit done and the knob tightened down. It's marked now to have the laser etching done and be straight where the knob tightens down to.

Now that fitment is confirmed, I'm confident in posting the drawing used. (Insert obligatory not responsible for damages, etc from using this design)
If there's time available this week on the laser etching machine, I'll have completed pictures done this weekend.
This will also include a size and weight comparison side-by-side with the factory shift knob.

For those who don't want the same design of shift knob, at least this lets you know the dimensions to retain the reverse lockout capability of the factory shift knob

Okay, so bad news first... laser marking didn't happen yet because I needed to mark the direction once the Boomba shifter was installed.

Good news, got the Boomba shifter (and other goodies) for Christmas!

First thing I did was install the door hinge and striker plate covers, here's a quick before/after of each.

Next up, another small one... the factory trunk hook! Used it this morning, I'm already a fan.

Now, here's the two shift knob weights. Stock is 199g, my fabricated one is 326g. Definitely a nice smoothness to the heavier knob, I like it!

Here's the before pictures showing the heights with each shift knob on.

And it's nice when a plan comes together!! The new shift knob, with the Boomba short shifter installed, sits about 3/4" lower than the stock shift knob. Perfect height for me.

Also included in this round of mods was the Perrin shifter bushing and shifter stop, only got pictures of one in my late-night haste though...

Overall thoughts, the shift feel is MUCH better after those four changes. Smoother, shorter, better placement, and tighter gates.
I'll get the marking done soon, I'm getting antsy to have it done

Whats your thought on this? Did it make a noticeable difference in cabin noise with the AC on?

It used to be if the radio was low or the fan was up you'd hear it, unless you were on the highway. Now, sitting still with the radio off, you'll hear it whistling through the vents before you hear the blower motor.

Installed a Cobb BigSF intake over the weekend, love the new sound. It opened the intake tract so much I could notice a change in the exhaust note.

Not sure why there aren't many comments, but I really like what you have going on here, simple and not overkill. I like the shift knob as well, always cool to see people fabricating their own parts. Whats next!?

Not sure why it's low traffic either, but I appreciate the feedback!

I still need to get the shift knob on the laser etching machine to do the Subaru logo on it. Also have some black emblems/frames to do a little work, haven't seen anyone do it the way I have planned yet. Debating on the next mods after that as I'm also lifting my truck at the same time.
