Talking Orchards In Winter TSD Rally (North Carolina), Subies win 2nd, 3rd!

Yes, indeed!

The Orchards in Winter TSD Rally in Asheville, NC was a rousing success. Subies took 2nd and 3rd place, and a fine time was had by all.

Scooby results:

2nd Place : Steven Rankins (Pleiades) and Jason Porter (me!)
3rd Place : Shane Warren (Warp3) and friend Cody

Woohoo! This was great considering it was our first time attempting a TSD rally, and my math skills aren't quite what they could be...

Steven and I managed not to kill each other somehow, even when we took a wrong turn at a confusing intersection and eventually ended up 50 miles off course. We made it all the way to Lake Lure by the time we verified our mistake by calling Shane on the phone. At least we had company in our misery! Jerry (deadbolt) and Bill (Scooby South) were in Jerry's WRX and were just as lost as we were.

We eventually gave up and headed directly to the restaurant, skipping the last two checkpoints since we knew they wouldn't be hanging around waiting for us for an extra hour! Considering we were within 5 seconds of perfect on more than 1 checkpoint, and very close on the others, I thought we might still have a chance for some kind of standing.

When we got there, they had already given out trophies. We waltzed in waving our time card and when they added up our penalty points, we were 2nd overall! Man, I thought somebody was going to jump over the table at us when they had to reshuffle the trophy medallions, but no violence occurred.

I'm now the proud owner of a HSCC Orchards in Winter Rally keychain, with the script 2nd - NAVIGATOR written on it.

What a blast. Next year Steven and I are going to run a TerraTrip rally computer, and we will be unstoppable. (Yeah, right! Until we get lost again!) WOOHOO! ALL YOUR TSD ARE BELONG TO US!!!

P.S. - Jerry (deadbolt) is at home stewing in bile. Man, was he pissed off! Sorry, Jerry!

It isn't black, its blue!

Congratulations!, nice to hear that some other subie users have discovered the sheer entertainment of TSD rallying!

-Yeah, so it's not flat out on closed stages, but a lot of the same challenges are there (staying on time staying on couurse, not getting into fisticuffs with the co-driver...), and it's a LOT cheaper to prep the car, -not to mention much less likely to break anything important.

And if you ever make it out for The Road Not Taken in Oregon, you'll find that TSD can be a lot closer to performance rallying than ever imagined

Rally on!

You'd be amazed how badly the A class (computer equipped) cars often do. It seems a lot of folks don't spend enough time studying the manuals for their computer. There's a lesson there for you somewhere... You need to learn to drive the thing under "simulated battle conditions", not sitting in the driveway quietly with a pint of the black stuff.

2002 WRX chassis...

The Covered Bridge TSD in Vermont was very cool (its 35th year this year). It was my first, and definitely won't be my last. I'm curious now though what the others this coming year in our area will be like when compared to it. It was 40% tight (barely 2 car widths, if that) curvy and hilly off-road, 40% wider (2 car widths) off-road, and 20% paved...and 100-120 miles long (I forget)!

Crazy crazy fun for 6 hours.

It's nice to hear of people having fun in events like this. It's infectious.
