Default Strength of jdm sti 5 speed?

Hello,
i am looking at buying a JDM 5 speed from the first years the STI appeared. the tranny code is TY752VB3CA. it was in the 93-94 STI rated at 250 hp. i read that the transmissions with the code TY754VN2BA has the wider gears. i thought i read that all the STI ra or non-ra have the wider gears, is that true? i am running a 04 USDM STI motor and not looking at going higher that stock 300 hp, but don't have the money to go for a full 6 speed yet, but know my stock 5 speed won't last to long. i was mainly wondering if the JDM SIT gears are wider or if they will take my 300 hp so i don't have to baby it anymore since i am to broke to get the 6 speed i want. thanks in advance.

Roy

No one on the planet knows what they will hold, go big or go home. Anything less that a 6MT or PPG set means you need to baby it.

Well... there are people on the planet that own them. From what I've researched in the UK and aussie forums, they may hold up pretty well, but I've come across threads where people have broken them. So yeah, I guess nobody really knows.

I have a vIII STi box waiting to go in, so I guess I'll find out soon enough.

If you search backa bit there was a thread with apoll for the RA/STi 5spd gears. Had about 200 votes and lots of replys. Most on there claimed to be going good upto and above 300WHP with few casaluties but like Ted ( <- think about it) said the Subaru 5 spd doesn't have the greatest track record with poor drivers and/or big HP numbers.

Yeah, I started that thread.

Like Unabomber said, anything other than a 6-speed or PPG should be baby'd.

That said, everytime I see somebody say, "I broke my stock box and two RA boxes before getting PPG's, they're the best!" The same person is on the board a couple months later breaking things on their transmission I've never heard other people break before. Why do you think that is?

True... PPG/6speed swaps seem to be a common source of "Where do you get stronger axles" threads, as the next weakest link in the driveline is revealed.

I'm not too worried about it, just the gear ratios alone (better spacing and 4.44fd) will make this transmission at least somewhat stronger than what I have. Add in another mm or so of width over my '02 gears, slightly more agressive tooth profiles and metal working that is rumored to be better, and it should be alright. On the other hand, the older 4 bolt case is downright dinky looking compared to the newer 8 bolt cases... so who knows, we'll see. I have heard some folks on the uk's sidc forum and in keaniegenie's thread speak with some confidence in the earlier STi 5mts, so maybe it's not all so bad.

Yeah, the earlier boxes had triple shot peened gears and were damn, damn strong. That's how RA gears became famous and popular. Then at some unknown point, Subaru switched manufacturers of RA gears and the shot peening went away and cryo came to light. Then we saw an emergence of RA boxes going boom in the night. I'm not discounting the current RA box as a viable option mind you, just giving out the history of the RA set as I've seen/researched it. Plus those old dinky 4 bolt cases will accept the 12kg center diff, which is hard to get ahold of and rare. It's supposedly THE center diff to have as it's the perfect compromise between the stock 4kg and the "overbearingly" tail happy 20kg unit, so there is some good to the 4 bolt case.

I'm really really tempted to pop that box open and see what's inside, look for shotpeening marks, measure widths, etc. But then again, it was put together at the factory and has held together for 35k miles so far, and the bolts haven't been touched, so I don't think I have the balls to disturb any of the insides. If it blows up it blows up, but if it does I don't wanna live with wondering if I caused it to blow up by not torqueing bolts correctly, or breathing on it wrong or something.
