Default 2.5 STI Hybrid - share some tuning tips!

I am in the process of doing the STI hybrid swap. I will be tuning with open source and could use some tuning tips.

My mods are:
stock wrx heads
STI headgaskets
modified stock injectors
VF22
TurboXS intake
lightweight flywheel
LC1 O2 sensor
TXS knocklite

I know there are some others here with similar setups so I'm looking for your advice on what ways this will differ from the stock maps and any specific trends related to this setup as far as timing or fueling go. If somebody has a map they could send me to use as a base map it would help me out a ton.

radrider, how are you calibrating your knocklite? at a stop in neutral? while rolling in gear? The TXS instructions a little bit vague on how/when you should calibrate it.

I have an LC1 as well

My hybrid is almost together and I'd really like to hear some input on this as well. I already have a tactrix cable and I think I'm going to go ahead get an LC-1...just because :P The knock light thing...I'd rather tune my so that it's never that close to being an issue. I plan on logging very frequently anyway sooo prolly won't need it. I hope....

do steady state pulls increments of 1k in rpm
so you can monitor the afrs.
after you get done with that full pull.

you will be building a custom fuel map that
is taylor suited for you engine.

after fuel monitor boost.

then repeat for timing

Calibrate the knocklite in nuetral as the engine won't knock without load. This is to get a baseline for the amount of noise the engine makes.

How much timing? Over the whole map or just certain areas? What will I have to do to the map to get a decent tune for break-in? I plan to run wastegate pressure only for the break-in period.

Not really the whole map just the boost areas

The new engine is in the car. Does anyone have an open source map I could start out with?? I'm not sure how to read the UTEC map posted above...

I need to break in the motor and the old map is just a stock 02 wrx code. Most of the upgrades are new so I'm not sure how safe the stock map is. If I can't find a map, I will probably just change the map by scaling the injectors, zero out the duty cycle for the boost solenoid, and take 3 degrees of timing out at higher load values. Then I will monitor AFR and make sure that is in the ballpark and not too rich or lean. Break it in for 1000 miles or so, then start tuning and increasing boost and adjusting timing.

Does this method sound safe to you more experienced tuners?

I know an AFR around in the high 10's, low 11's is good for high load on 93 octane but what about lower load values? I would imagine it would run much leaner than 11:1 at low loads so it can transfer smoothly into closed loop?

Also, does the TurboXS short ram intake mess up the fuel calibration? It is supposed to be the same size tubing and therefore a direct replacement but I forgot to verify the actual diameter when it was off the car.

So after people have tuned the timing down on these hybrids, are people getting ECUs pulling timing randomly? Seems to be an endemic problem on enginuity.org. People here seem to have had some luck, so maybe i t's a car to car thing, and not something inherenetly wrong with 2.0L ECUs?

You will just have to see how your ECU reacts to your specific engine. Maybe it won't pull timing, maybe it will. Just make sure you get your tune really conservative and see if it is pulling timing. The knocklite should help you confirm if it is real or not.

Make sure you check for anything that could be causing false knock before you just call it an over-sensitive ECU. Loose heatshields, other rattles, over-torqued knock sensor, etc. Then try cutting the wire you tapped in for your knocklite (if you are not running a separate sensor) to make sure your knocklite isn't causing the ECU to see false knock.

If it does have issues with false knock, your only choice is pretty much a UTEC or Hydra. I went the UTEC route and it works exceptionally well for my hybrid swap. I tried a lot of things in order to eliminate the knock problems, but without some kind of custom active filtering of the knock signal or a change to the ECU code you are pretty much out of luck.
