Post Procedures for getting/ordering a WRX?

I want to get this car badly, this car will replace my now dead 1990 winter beater. I've been scratching my head trying to figure out when/if I can afford this thing. It's looking like a fall time frame affordability wise (or even next spring). I've pretty much settled in on a 5 spd wagon WRX.

Anyway, my questions:

- One local dealer says he was taking $2K deposits on initial allocations. What's the procedure for this? I didn't ask but I assume that you put down the deposit, wait till the car shows up, and pretty much pay MSRP on the car. Is this how it works? Or do people agree to a price/options, get a written contract and then put down the deposit? I pretty much assume you are going to pay MSRP but lots of people on this forum seem to be getting them for $1K off.

- I do not really want to pay full MSRP. If I could get about $1K-$2K off in 6-12 months time, that would be great. Is anybody here wanting to get one but want to pay less than MSRP? Since I can't afford it now, I am hoping supply will gain momentum on the demand after the 6 month initial frenzy. When I bought my wife's 97 Audi A4, the dealer here would only give $1K off, and I had to plunk down a $3K deposit and still wait three months. Screw that I said, so I went to a large Toronto dealer through Autobytel and bought one out of incoming allotment, and saved another $1K off the price and they had the two cars that matched what I wanted.

- So anyway, any advice you can give to buying this car? What kind of arrangements have you buyers made to get this car? What's your strategy? I want to know what kinds of deals people are getting if any.

$2K is a pretty big deposit. I think the average ive been hearing is around $500.

Anyways, before I put down a deposit, I would really recommend getting a price in writing. My dealer here wasnt interested in talking price yet, so I left it for now.

Its hard to say right now, but I think after the first inital months, there will be cars sitting on the dealers lot. Id wait and see what happens if I were you...

I think 2K is a pretty hefty deposit too. Well since I'm not buying within 6 months I'm going to have to wait anyway. Just hopefully there will be some cars sitting around like you say. Even after 6 months of the introduction of the Audi A4 1.8T that I bought, the local dealer was not getting enough of them and MSRP -$1000 was the best he was willing to do.

Hey warpdrive what dealer wanted $2,000? Ottos?

I put a $1,000 deposit down at Ogilvie's here in Ottawa (w/ Tom McCullough) in early December. He filled out his five req sheets; 2 blue sedans, a silver sedan, a white sedan and a blue wagon (all manual). Last time I talked to him, he had already pre-sold three of them (I'm the blue wagon). He said to expect delivery in the third week of April.

Otto's didn't get their req sheets until a couple of weeks ago, and they have since pre-sold four out of six last I heard.

When I gave him my deposit we signed a vehicle purchase agreement stating that I would pay MSRP, and it was conditional on the colour and specifications (no one knew anything back in December). I know, everyone is going to call me a sucker for agreeing to pay MSRP but hey, there are only two dealers and I didnít want to miss this shipment and have to wait. It is illegal for a dealer to charge more than MSRP in Canada, and Iím sure it is possible to spend enough time/effort talking a dealer down to less than MSRP and then give him a deposit. But there is nothing in the law that stops him from selling Ďyourí car to someone else at full price while keeping your name on his list (and your deposit in his bank account) until he is willing to sell one for less.

Just a thought.
