The factory 5 year/60k powertrain warranty would still be valid for you, but that doesn't cover power steering.

The original factor warranties don't have to be transferred & it doesn't matter how many owners the car has had - additional purchased coverage (including Subaru Gold, etc.) does have to be transferred to a new owner & usually there is a small fee involved. Most of the time the original owner will just cash in & get a pro-rated refund anyways...

The dealer is wrong. The 5/60 is on the car, not the owner. However, power steering isn't covered under the powertrain.

The power steering system isn't part of the powertrain, so coverage of that lapsed back when the 3/36k ran out.

The powertrain is (in the case of Subaru) Engine block and all internal parts, Cylinder heads and valve trains, Oil pump, oil pan, Timing belts or gears and covers, Water pump, Flywheel, Intake manifold, Oil seals and gaskets, Torque converter, Electronic transmission control unit, Transaxle seals and gaskets, Axle shafts and constant velocity joints (except boots), and the Propeller shaft
