Default something quick, dont want to annoy the neighbors

Well my girlfriends car was stolen yesterday (broad daylight in the front row at a wal-mart), so it got me thinking about how easy it would be for someone to steal my car.

With the factory alarm set, if someone breaks in and/or opens a door and the alarm starts going off, does it kill the ignition or can they just drive off like nothing happened?

It kills the starter only. On an MT that isn't much of a deterrent, as the many people in NJ with factory alarms who had their cars stolen can tell you firsthand.

Ok, so aftermarket alarm it is.

I park in a garage every night and I havent worried about it, but after her car getting stolen like it did I realized it was a false sense of security.

Ya no doubt. The police caught him at a stoplight about 15 minutes after it was stolen (she seen the guy drive out of the lot with her car).

(copied from another thread about it just because it is funny)

apparently it was some meth head that took off with it and the police caught him at a light right by the wal-mart. chandler pd ftw, they are all over the place. she has a dash mat that says "jessica" on it and i guess the cop was giving him all kinds of **** and called him jessica the whole time. he made him sit in the car with the heat on (it was 110 outside) while he was doing the report for making a pregnant woman have to be outside in the heat waiting for the cops to come.

Aftermarket alarms are nice but don't fool yourself. If they want it they WILL get it no matter what security system you have. It will stop the rookies or the joy riders but not the pros.

Hooking up a method to killer your fuel pump will stop many would be thieves but I would say that the majority of thefts now involve a tow truck so don't kid yourself. An alarm is really to keep the somewhat dishonest honest, where a real thief would have no trouble snagging the car.

What a world eh? You can work your balls off to have nice things, and some low life piece of ish can do nothing but reap the fruits of everyone elses labor.

All I can say is that if it happens with me anywhere in the vicinity, jail is the least of their worries......

I've been looking around for extra security and haven't really been impressed by what I've found in either aftermarket alarms or GPS tracking systems, and am now leaning toward a kill switch. From my brief search, this is a pretty solid set-up.

Once I finish up my stage 2 mods I'll probably end up getting one.

are they paying people to post this junk on the forums? there have been a few people now swearing about how great this basic starter/ignition kill system is that you could defeat with a paper clip.

There are a lot of ways to steal a car and if someone wants your car more then likely they can get it.

Car specific programmed imobilizers are a good security and will work against all but the most well equiped car jackers.

well while i agree completely.. if u look at it from their pov.. they r working hard to steal ur ish, add in the risks and the effort of not getting caught, it must be damn hard work.. just at the expense of another..

which in turn is why i am going to be a police officer.. cant stand criminals, and the fact that hard working law abiding citizens get the shaft because of them..tho we pay for it either way..

Actually this unit has been discussed in the car audio security section forum before. Basically in summation, devices like the ravelco (there are tons of other brands out there that are similar) are easy to defeat for a professional. There are only so many places it can be wired to, and many have easy ways to get around the bypass.

The best thing you can do to protect things in or on the vehicle is with an alarm installed properly. (ie not easy to trace or access the brain.)

The best thing you can do to protect your whole vehicle from being stolen (other than where you park it) is with some sort of gps tracking system.
95***37; of new cars have a factory immobilizer system that is much better than any aftermarket solution. And because of this, the majority of car thefts are via tow-truck which an alarm or ignition/starter bypass can't protect against.

Oh and thanks for the compliment.

How effective is the old school "club" used correctly (parked next to a curb with the wheels turned till the steering wheel locks)?

not very effective. if you've seen how fast a cordless sawzall can go through a steering wheel, they could have it off in probably less than 30 sec.

They'll just drive over the curb.

My suggestion would be to get a paging alarm with good range. While pricey, it'll let you know when something happens. As a side benefit, you can usually add cool features like a turbo timer and remote start for not much extra. The clifford series has a bunch of 'add-ons' such as glass breakage sensors, tilt (for towing) sensors, back-up batteries, etc...while a professional theif may still be able to 'get' your car, in lowers the chance of them keeping it. They may even have built in/electronic kill swithces.

i second the 2 way alarm. also the fuel cut off is a good idea also. air horns. after market key imobizers are good you can cut multiple circuits ex: ignition, starter and fuel. basically everything is a deterant slow the person down or make them want to walk away.

Car alarms are getting so complicated with how the alarm system is installed and integrated that if someone wants to steal your car it most likely won't happen without you at least knowing its being attempted.

you don't need to start a car to steal it.
it DOES make it easier though.

Newer cars do, but the older ones obviously don't. Besides, a transponder can be cracked by a competent thief...Much more difficult but still not impossible.

There is a extremely high chance you will never get a car thief who has the skills nor the tools to pull this off.

And it all depends on what kinda immobilizer it is.
Im not really sure what they are like now but once you start getting 128 byte encryptions on them you'll have to be a computer hacker to get the car started.
