Need advice on dealing with a situation (friend painted car for cheap. too cheap)
My friend painted my RS for 1500 dollars labor + 760 dollars for supplies. (I saw the full itemized list he gave to the paint supplier, who said it looked like proper quantities of paper/tape/etc for the car size).
He has a body shop (closing soon) I was supposed to help with the prepping, which I did sort of slack on (but I was working 40-50 hour weeks and he works 2 jobs so it was hard to meet up). 2 months later I get the car back, mostly assembled. -Theres orange peel everywhere. -Theres dust in the clear coat on almost every body facet. -Theres dents everywhere (more dents than when I took it to him at the start, and I watched him fix every dent) Many of them were caused by the racks he set my doors on when he painted them. -Theres a scratch on my wheel I did not put there -His painting was screwy so I bought more paint and clear, to the tune of 225ish dollars for him to fix his mistakes -All my underhood powdercoating went from gloss to semigloss. I like the way it looks, but how in the hell did that happen? -My wheels appear to be patchy semi-gloss now (making me think it was some sort of aerosol that did it) (keep in mind these have less than 500 mi on them (rotas, but still)) -Theres a black dot about the size of a pencil eraser on the center of my hood embedded in the paint layer -He broke a trim piece. Subaru wants 150 dollars. I may have found one for 50 -He broke my antenna cable off. I told him to give it a little tug and it ripped clean off the antenna. -He also quickly zipped out a hole for my FMIC when I told him to go very slowly because I wasn't physically capable at the time to trim it (I hadn't been prescribed pills for my shaking at the time) It looks not too great. I am now over our original quote by about 500-600 dollars because of: 225ish for paint 100 for a guy to buff the clear coat to fix it after we had to wetsand some imperfections out 40-150 for that trim piece and another 75-150 for someone to remove the dents as best as possible. I paid him 800 cash about 2.5 weeks ago. Hes asking for the rest essentially by Friday. What do I do, honestly? I mean I've learned my lesson here discounts=screw jobs most of the time. I'm broke. I can get him his $, but it won't be fun. I was thinking possibly just telling him how I feel, and paying him 300 dollars or something.

From your description, you could have gotten a better full respray at Maaco for like $500.

your friend has no idea what he is doing. if he was your friend, he wouldnt charge you, needless to say, charge you even that much. I've seen near flawless work from maaco for 700$. Check Honda-tech if you dont believe me. but from the sounds of it. Your friend fubar'd your car, and wants more money out of it? I'd be pissed, and would expect him to fix the **** he messed up for free

One of the first things I learned in an automotive life:
Never let a friend paint your car. Espically if he's giving you a "great deal" on it. Stories like these never end up well. |

Well, $2260 - $800 = $1460
$1460 - $600 = $860 You could offer him $860, if you want to be nice. If you have your keys, you might consider telling him to go **** himself, and settle it in court... The People's Court. |

Partially, he seems to shrug some of it off as me being picky.
I understand I'm not going to have a glass coat, but parts of my paint are like if you have mud stuck to your car and rub your hand over it, that rough grainy feel. |

Be forward and stern and tell him like it is... still be nice, but don't let him "shew" you off.

Wow, tough one.
I'd say confront him about it. If he's a true friend he'll take care of the problems. |

Well I told him I needed to talk to him about some existing issues and some other things. He responded with "yea this is all you hear about in the industry, poeple love the car, then go home spend a week finding defects and blame the painter with "you overcharged me, you screwed it up".
I called him and said thats not how I felt but there were many problems I wanted resolved. I'm supposed to show him the car tomorrow and we'll talk. Alex |

If hes a good friend, work something out.
Otherwise get your parts back and dont pay him anymore money, you didnt pay him for a junky paintjob. Plus that last quote, sounds like lots of people didnt like his work.... |

Is this a friend or an acquaintance? From the sounds of,
Quote:
Since there's probably nothing in writing and he did it as a favor I'd say you're both screwed. He's not responsible for quality of work and you're paying him on good faith. I'd say just wait and see what your meeting holds. Take some pics and post them up. |

My boss got his car painted at Earl Shives (Maaco) for $275 and it sounds like it's in better condition that your car, sorry to hear. Like everyone said, if he's really your friend he'll understand when you tell him to F-off.

Here's a couple leading questions:
1) Do you have any "before" pictures?...these can show the before dent status to compare to the after status 2) Was there anything in writing? 3) Have you gotten a quote from another shop to repair the paint/get it back into good shape? 4) How good of a friend is this? It is definitely a sticky situation, whether the painter is a friend or not. My opinion is to treat the situation as you would any other business. If the results are not satisfactory, see if he can make amends (ie: fix his work), or get a quote from a reliable shop to fix everything. Take his price to you minus the cost to fix everything and offer him that as payment. If it comes out to be a negative number (ie: he owes you money), then so be it. A professional opinion on the outcome of the paint job by a reliable shop would also settle any of the "your just picky" accusations. Worst case, yes, take him to court. If he holds your car parts ransom, be sure to include their cost/return in any court statements. It would be very unprofessional for him to hold your parts ransom. Good luck. |

Your friend will be asking YOU the questions soon. I should say question. That question will be "would you like fries with that?".
