Default 2002 Impreza RS exhaust question

I recently just bought a 2002 RS (my first Subaru) and a previous owner had replaced with exhaust from the catalytic converter to the muffler with a larger pipe and louder muffler. For my purposes with the car, mainly just daily driving, and living either in a suburban subdivision or a college campus depending on the time of year, the exhaust is a bit loud for my surroundings.

So I guess what I need to know is what is my best option to replace the exhaust? I've looked at junkyards around town and there don't seem to be any Imprezas at any of them, but there is an Outback at one. Do the Imprezas and Outbacks use the same exhaust pipe? I read somewhere that the Outback Sport shared the same platform as the Impreza, but I didn't know if that meant that the exhaust pipe would be the same.

Also, would it be better to just buy another muffler and have it welded on to the current pipe? I'm looking for relatively cheap options (hopefully $150 or less if possible) so if anyone has a good recommendation for a pretty quiet muffler that would be great too.

Thanks everyone!

the Outback Sport is really just an Impreza, so that would definitely work. wrx exhausts will "fit" as well, but the flange needs to be rotated to fit your RS header.

I'd swing it by a local muffler shop and have them give you a quote to replace the fart cannon muffler and potentially add a resonator to your existing pipe, to further quiet it down. hell, they could probably build you a new "stock" style exhaust pretty inexpensively.

Outback = Legacy wagon
Outback sport = Impreza wagon

Outback exhaust is not really a bolt in to your RS.
Outback sport midpipe I believe is the same length as an RS midpipe. Axleback is a bit longer I believe.
Don't remember, is the OBS a 2.2 or 2.5? If 2.2, exhaust is a little smaller in diameter.

Appreciate the feedback!

The local muffler shop seems like the best bet. Do you have any suggestions for a muffler I should get to have put on or do you think I should just go with shop's recommendation?
