Default Ran out of gas last night

I ran out of gas last night on the freeway, and the car simply couldn't sputter its way to the next exit. A couple weeks ago I flirted with running on empty, with the car hesitating seriously but making it to a gas station. Anyway, just wondering whether driving to the point you run out of gas has any long term effects on a N/A Impreza.

I dunno about you...but I try to get gas atleast every 240miles, which is about 10 miles before my warning light goes off.

I wouldn't try it too often. Right before it stalls the car goes into an EXTREMELY lean burn regime, due to their being no gas to burn. This causes extremely high temps. The first casualty would be your catalytic converter.

cheers

It's VERY bad to run your injectors dry. ALso, at the point that the light even comes on you are in danger of sucking up more of the crud that has settled to the bottom of your tank. You might want to change your fuel filter to be safe.

Electric fuel pumps depend on the fuel flowing thru them to keep

them cool. Running your fuel pump and injectors dry is a big no no.

When your low fuel light comes on, you have 2.3 gallons of usable fuel left. And, 1 gallon of unusable fuel left in the tank so not to mess w. injectors after refueling. That's , what, at least 60 miles! But, no, runing them dry will not harm them.

All the people I know that have run out of gas have said that they had to make MAJOR repairs to their cars to repair them. They weren't driving subies, but one of my boys with an Integra ran all his gas out, and had to dump $1500 into it to get it running again.

I wouldn't recommend it, but maybe you're ok. Won't catch me doing it though...

Hmm, that doesn't sound good at all... I knew I had over 2 gallons left when the light came on. I had 60 miles to go to my destination. But I did not make it. I can't say for sure if the car is ok. The car has seemed sluggish ever since the time a week or two ago I almost ran out gas and it almost stalled on the freeway.

Many fuel pumps are fuel lubricated to so runing dry has obvious consequences.

hey just a tip.

There's this little thingy in the dash that measures your remaining fuel. Stop running out of GAS!! This is not difficult. When that little light turns on gets some gas. If your going a long ways get some gas.

Sorry to bash you but I have to laugh.

Points and laughs :monkey:

Tainted - the Subaru gas gauge is not without error. When I'm on E I have about 5 gallons left. Below E is anyone's guess. When I noticed I had about 250+ miles on the odometer, I started getting nervous and put in $5. I've never seen a low fuel light and I starting to think I don't have one.

This time it had an error. Pure highway driving, and it was less than two gallons left when the light came on. In the past I've been lucky.

I think something is now wrong with how it revs, it's a bit jerky accelerating now. Any ideas what this could be?

Jerky acceleration is a classic symptom of a clogged fuel filter. I would swap it out, it's only a few bucks and 5 minutes in the Autozone parking lot. While you're at it throw in a bottle of Techron or other premium fuel system cleaner. That should set you up.

good luck,
mbs

Is a fuel filter different than the oil filter?

Definitely! Here is a generic Suby underhood from a Chilton book. The fuel filter is a small black metal thing about the size of a soup can, held in by a round metal clamp. It's got two rubber hoses coming into it and they're both held on by hose clamps. It's (11) in the picture.

You should depressurize the fuel system before you change the filter or you're going to get sprayed. I'm not sure the best way to do this.

cheers
mbs

Edit: the Chilton book says to disconnect the fuel pump and crank the engine for 5 seconds (if it starts, let it stall). That sounds like a pain in the butt, if there is a fuel pump fuse or relay, pulling that would be much easier.

Acutally, those 75 caddy's had an 8.2 liter V8. Largest engine ever built for a production car until just recently

The reason I know this is that it almost became my first car.

350HP
400LB/Ft torque
6000lb car
