#ProjectNastyWagon - LS1 T56 R200

Hi Guys and Gals,
I'm Charley. I build stuff. Gods gift to me was my ability to drive and ride.I love the out doors and I tolerate the City. I hate "stock" anything. I take on way more projects than I should.

My name 3mlwhly means 3 Mile Wheelie. It's been my alias for as long as I can remember.

I also go by C star and you can follow me on @Cstar_built if you like fabrication and modifications.

Me:

My car is a 1999 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport or OBS. I bought it as an Auto and swapped in a manual 5 speed with a welded center diff to make it RWD and did some odds and ends to make it work better and look a little better. Well the motor died so now I now have no choice but to put an LS1 5.7 V8 backed by a T56 6 speed transmission. I am also going to swap in an R200 with a Cusco 2-way in the rear.

Lets get this straight right from the beginning... This is not a show car or trailer queen I am building this as my daily driver and full function drift car. I might make it look good some day but that is not my main goal.

What the car looked like when I bought it:

Last time it ran:

Now:

Well, hope every one enjoys.

Front mounts burned in for the r200 diff tonight. I'll be adding more bracing too.

Tossed the motor in to make some measurements to decide how I'm going to set it up. I'm hoping I don't have to drop the steering rack because then I'll need to build a new cross member.

Also got the r200 mounts boxed up.

So hammered out the trans tunnel and now the trans fits just about perfect. I have come to the realization that I have to modify the front x-member and drop the steering rack. There is no way around it... motor fits the bay nicely though.

Also I finished the rear crossmember now all that's left is paint. I'm not stoked on my welds but eh... it gets the job done.

Hey man this build is gonna be rad. i am curious about what you are gonna do for axles out of the r200. im sure you have more money than i do but im looking for a decent fix to running a rwd wrx and not snapping axles.

Thanks man!

Well I don't have a lot of money by any means. Actually quite the opposite. I will be running custom spindles, but that's all I'm willing to tell at this point ...

I want to keep a little surprise in this thread if you know what I mean. It will not be a really expensive option though so keep an eye out on here and you will find out soon 🏻🏻🏻

I'm still working away at it. I'm currently working on my spindles and brake set up. I had to pull it out of the garage for some other projects for a while but I'm back at it now.

I've got a jig built for the front crossmember too but I'm contemplating some other ideas for that too.

I will give you guys some updates when I have some completed projects to show you.

Nice fab work so far. What did you source the LS motor from? What pan is on it, and could the cross-member clearance be fixed with a different pan?

You've probably already seen them, but there are some LSX builds in the Subaru Conversions forum. They might give you some ideas on the front cross-member.

Thanks Patrick!! Yeah I've seen Ty and Teddy's journals since they were very new. There is a ton of ideas and good work on both of them. I am not doing things quite like either of them though. Gotta be my own brand of different.

As for the motor it is a 5.7L from a 2002 Camaro and the trans is a t-56 from a 2005 GTO.

I don't see anyway that the steering rack can stay in the stock location. That was my original hopes but It didn't work out as planned. I'm planning to run either a sikky front sump pan or a canton front sump. A rear sump was my original plan because it's the cheapest option but my measurements show it would be really right and I don't see the point in buying a pan just to cut it and modify it.
