Default ** PERRIN Lightened Crank Pulley DIY **

Weight reduction is key to making the best use of any available HP and torque. The PERRIN Performance Crank Pulley is 4-pounds lighter than the stock crank pulley. This reduction is equal to removing more than 100 lbs of vehicle weight! Throttle response, horsepower and torque are all increased with this easy to install product! For more information click here

Needed tools:
1) Socket or wrench 10mm, 12mm, and 22mm
2) WD-40 or other lubricant
3) A good friend to help and or watch (GO DUCK's)

Step 1) Removal of the stock crank pulley, I started with removing the plastic belt cover. This will allow access to the belt tensioner bolt and nut. To do this I used a 10mm socket.

Step 2) Loosen the alternator tensioner lock bolt with a 12mm socket. I made sure to do this before I loosened the tensioning bolt. Once the alternator tensioner bolt is loosened you can loosen the tensioning bolt. Just loosen it until the belt comes loose enough to remove from the engine. If the belt is tough to remove apply pressure on the alternator, this will remove enough pressure allowing the belt to be removed.

Step 3) Using a 12mm socket loosen the air conditioner tensioner lock bolt, make sure to do this be for you loosen the tensioning bolt. Once the tensioner lock bolt is loose us the 12mm socket to loosen the tensioning bolt until the belt becomes loose. Now you can remove the belt from the engine.

Step 4) It is now time to place the transmission in 5th gear, double check that the parking brake is also pulled. (NOTE IF THE CAR IS AUTOMATIC PLEASE SEE THE FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL)

Step 5) Using a breaker bar and a 22mm socket I loosened the crankshaft bolt. (TURN COUNTER CLOCKWISE)

Step 6) With the crankshaft bolt removed I was able to slide the factory pulley out of place. (IF THE PULLEY DOES NOT SLIDE OUT DO NOT PRY OUT, THIS CAN DAMAGE THE PULLEY, CRANKSHAFT OR OTHER ENGINE COMPONENTS).If needed use penetrating oil to loosen the pulley. If the pulley still doesn’t come off use a suitable commercial puller.

It is now time to install the PERRIN Lightened Crank Pulley

Before I installed the lightened crank pulley I first had to remove a little rust from the nose of the crankshaft. To do this I used a Scotchbrite pad.

Step 1) Slide pulley onto crank, slowly turn the pulley to align the keyway with the key on the crank. BE SURE TO SLIDE THE PULLEY COMPLETLY ON, FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN DAMAGE TO THE PULLEY AND THE NOSE OF THE CRANKSHAFT.

Step 2) Make sure to apply engine oil to crankshaft pulley bolt, and threads. Tighten bolt to 33ft-lbs. Make sure to note the bolts position with marking paint or pen (or the wife’s fingernail polish). Now tighten the bolt to 94ft-lbs. This final tightening should only move the bolt 45 degrees or less.

Step 3) I then reinstall the belt to the factory specs and replaced the plastic belt cover. After taking a little 15 minute test drive I arrived back to my house a much happier person.

I was able to notice a dramatic difference in the way the engine built power.

As you can see we finished up just in time to beat the darkness, not to mention the cold. I'll be sure to start the next DIY around noon and not at 4pm.

Thanks

Ken

Hey thanks for the compliment

After driving around town for the last week I have to say that this is a must have. You can really feel the benefits after about 2K RPM’s.

Here is a side by side of the new PERRIN Pulley and the old heavy stock pulley.

Default about perrin pulley

If you have a prolite flywheel (9.6lbs) could having the perrin pulley create misfires in the cylinders? I had an underdrive pulley and I had misfires in cylinders 1,2,3... When i put the stock pulley back on i haven't had any problems... I would like to get the Perrin one but I do not want to waste the money if it is going to do the same...

Ya there is such a noticeable difference off the line that it almost makes driving from light to light during traffic fun. So far out of all of the parts I’ve installed on the PERRIN Project $15k, Bug-Eye Budget Build this is the most enjoyable. Don’t get me wrong the other mods are enjoyable especially the exhaust but for some reason I just love this one.

I can’t wait till the next mod…….

Any word on the rumor that it does cause misfires. Looks really nice though, great writeup!

I just picked one up recently, took not even 15 minutes to install alone. Excellent lil bang for the buck part. I told my buddy with a 04 wrx wagon about it and he bought one as well. Just as easy to install on his car

The weight comparison between the stock and this pulley is INSANE!! I cant believe how heavy the stock pulley was.

Edit: Ive been running this mod for only a month or 2 now but I have NOT had an CEL's at all, especially misfires.

Long long ago when the WRX's first came out, there were certain brands that caused this issue. Who knows why, but when replaced with other brands, its went away. PERRIN Brands were not the problem, and not in all cases were PERRIN brands the fix. So it was a general crank pulley. Some suspected it was from the way the ECU was programed to detect misfires on these early cars.

To this day, we have only had 2 crank pulleys returned because of misfire issues. So its is very very rare for this to happen.

But if you have a superlight flywheel and a crank pulley it is possible that this can cause it, even this case is kind of rare. But if anyone has had an issue, give us a call, and we will help you out!

This is a very easy and for the most part simple installation. The only problem that I ran into was that while I was removing the stock pulley the key had been pulled up just enough that the PERRIN Pulley would not slid back into place.

After a couple drinks of beer my good buddy Steve decided to lightly tap the key into place. He did this with a long flat head screw driver and a hammer. Make sure that if you need to do this that you tap the rear of the key making sure not to split the key.

You have a green light to use the PERRIN lightened crank pulley with the Cobb tuning.

I hope this helps

I actually did this install last weekend.

I had to put a big pipe on my breaker bar to get the crank bolt to break lose.

All and all this is a pretty easy mod to complete. Definitely make sure you get that pulley back on correctly. You'll know when it's on correctly as the pulley won't spin freely any more.

Ken,
With regards to step 2) and pushing down on the alternator, my alternator wouldn't budge until I loosened the bolt that held the alternator to its mounting bracket.

Any thoughts on these with the newer motors? My 07 OEM crank pulley is a LOT more substantial than the earlier ones. This leads me to think that its either at least somewhat of a damper (I mean obviously heavier would "absorb" the vibrations more) and that for some reason Subaru thinks it needs it.

I ran a lightened pulley on my 02 WRX and my 05 STI, but they both had pulleys like the one in the pic above. The pulley on my 07 is a LOT heavier. There has to be a reason they went to a heavier pulley.
I dont think the older motors needed a heavy pulley or damper, as they never had problems with light pulleys, but with this 07 motor having a redesigned pulley, I have to wonder.

I am thinking about all this because I am considering putting my old cobb pulley on my motor. My buddy has it and isnt using it anymore and will sell it back to me CHEAP

Ken,
It seems to have made a noticeable difference, definitely worth the money. I also deleted my AC as well. The car put down right around 500/500 at the wheels prior to this mod. If I ever get it back on the dyno, I'll see how much this freed up.
