How many have actually experienced WRX abs problem?
I just wanted to know how many of you have actually experienced the ABS problem discussed in the Warranty/SOA thread.
I'm suppose to pick up my car in March but am a little apprehensive now. Thanks

ahhh, spastic anti lock brakes...yet another one of the wrx's many quirks. I personally have had a few scary moments with my abs, 3 times to be exact. But that's also the same abs system that has saved my ass once or twice, so I'm not complaining I personally wouldn't pass up buying a wrx because of the abs, but that's just me.

welp, when I'm braking to a stop (each time it has happened I was going downhill on semi rough, bumpy pavement) when I brake lightly, it triggers the abs as if I just slammed my foot on the brake in a panic stop. Bear in mind, each time it happened, I was braking very lightly. Its only happened a few times in the 6 months that I've owned my wagon, so I wouldn't consider it to be a major problem at this point.

ABS Brake Solution
I too have experienced the slowing on bumps/ABS snafu. It's always happened at the same interesection, so what I started doing was almost completely releasing the brakes as the car passed over the bumps (there are about three of them at about 50' intervals) and then compensate by braking a little harder between the bumps. I know that doesn't eliminate the problem when braking on continuous bumps/ripples, especially when stopping on a downhill, but you could brake harder BEFORE getting to the ripples (I guess that might only be possible if you're familiar with the hill, etcetera). It seems that what happens is the tire just momentarily loses contact with the ground, then re-contacts the ground at a speed lesser than it should be spinning, which seems to fool the brakes into thinking you've begun a skid. However, I don't think the brakes are necessarily defective, as I'm sure the WRX isn't the only ABS equipped car that does this. It could just be part and parcel of having ABS brakes: that is, if that tendency was eliminated, maybe the change in function would detract from some genuinely necessary ability in other, more dangerous situation. I'm no expert on these things, so these are just a few thoughts.

Abs almost killed me
I hate the ABS.. i almost got screwed over twice, once , when I was on 280 in the city, making a left on to 3rd, I had to stop over some tracks... the brakes.. just went ape ****! The other time in LA, when I was getting off a ramp, and had to do another emegency brake, but over some uneven road (it is like tar-ed up highway road) .. it also went crazy and I couldn't stop.
Word or precaution, always allow room for the car to stop, incase the brakes fails! =) |

I've had some problems when it snowed. It just kicked in too early. So now I have a switch for such instances. I'm working too much, look at the way I talk ("instances"?). Grrr.

How do you install a switch to turn off abs, that is a sweet idea... do you have any wiring info?

I've had one scary ABS experience over the last 10 months and 12,000 miles. Half the road was covered with gravel (right wheels were rolling over it) and the left side of the car was rolling on relatively clean asphalt. The ABS modulated a lot and it felt as if I had no brakes for about a second.
The more I think about it, the more I think it was just the ABS trying to do it's job. I was going too fast for the conditions and my car stopped in a very straight line. It was scary though. ABS saved my bacon the other night when I was cut off on 680 in rapidly decelerating traffic. Somebody whipped there car into my lane without signaling (or looking) as traffic was going from ~60 to a dead stop. If the car behind me had been following 10 feet closer I would have been ended. |

ABS almost killed me too
On Calaveras road, approaching a downhill hairpin..pavement is a bit bumpy and the pedal went down and nothing happened...no braking action. Fortunately, I was able to hit the corner a bit too hot and scrub off the speed with the tail out. But if I hadnt been able to react to it in time to pick the right line to go around the hairpin ass out, or if there had been an obstacle, like another car, or if the turn had been banked wrong, I'm sure I'd have crashed.
And the crappy RE-92's didnt help me either. Nothing like the shriek of cheap rubber folding over in the turn to reassure you. |

Ken,
With all due respect, I have read the thread about your accident (see attached link). I am definitely sympathetic to your loss. Additionally, I am not going to say that the ABS had nothing to do with your accident. However, after reading the details I think it is only fair to place some of the blame on the tires you were running on at the time. Having said that, I plan to wire a switch which will turn off my ABS so I can decide if conditions warrant its use. http://www.i-club.com/forums/showthr...hreadid=140603 |

The tires may have had something to do with it, but not all it it or even close. I tell ya, I lifted off the brake pedal, and when I went back on, the pedal was still pumping. It never stopped! I never felt the car slipping at all.

I think that would have made it worse. I was down shifting the whole time as is my norm.

I already posted my experiences in the Warranty forum, so I won't reiterate, but I will weigh in on their being a problem with the ABS. I've driven a lot of ABS equipped cars, including my wife's '00 Grand Cherokee with the offroad suspension, and none have exhibited this trouser-staining behavior. ABS coming-in on a slick freeway during a panic stop is a good thing, and that pulsating pedal is a reassurance in a bad situation. ABS coming-in under light to moderate braking on a dry day is frightening, as its unexpected and quickly moves your state of being from calm normalcy to outright panic. I always considered this phenomenon an annoying quirk, but after rolling right-on through the GG tollbooth with no brakes, I think it a matter of time before the ABS causes me to tag some hapless bloke in the arse.

You can actually hang the gas cap in the little dip in the door (gas cap door that is)
Then its not hitting your body |
