i thought i was gonna be on this list last night. was comming home from a friends house an had a car hauling ass down the road, then i noticed he was halfway in my lane, i swirved to avoid him. the rear end of the car swung around and clipped a telephone pole an i went spinning and t-boned a big tree on the drivers side of the car. All i can say is me and my buddy walked away from the accident, sore as hell this morning. but still, it was scary as hell.

of course the other car kept going.

Police: 7 Dead in Street Racing-Related Crash in Prince George's

7 Dead in Street Racing-Related Crash in Prince George's

By STEPHEN MANNING
Associated Press Writer
ACCOKEEK, Md. (AP) -- A car plowed into a crowd that had gathered to watch an illegal street race on a suburban road early Saturday, killing seven people and injuring at least four others, authorities said.

Police were uncertain if the white sedan was involved in the race; a witness said the spectators had just watched two cars in the race drive by when a vehicle without any lights on came up behind them and veered into a crowd of about 50 people.

"There were just bodies everywhere; it was horrible," said Crystal Gaines, 27, of Indian Head.

Gaines grabbed her child but could not help her father, William Gaines Sr., 61, who was among the dead.

"He wasn't breathing, he wasn't moving," she said. "His body was in pieces."

Hours after the 3:40 a.m. accident on the divided Route 210 highway in Accokeek, bodies covered in white sheets were scattered along what police were calling a 200-yard crime scene. Some were in the road, while others were on the shoulder.

Prince George's County Police Capt. Donald Frick said "there was a speed event going on" and that the apparent driver of the car had been interviewed and did not appear to be seriously hurt; a passenger was among the dead. The car came to a rest on an embankment about 150 feet from where the crowd had been. It had a crumpled front and hood, and the roof had partially collapsed.

It was unclear if police had interviewed the drivers of the other cars. A tractor-trailer truck that came by shortly afterward may also have struck someone on the roadside as it tried to avoid the crash scene, about 20 miles south of Washington, said Cpl. Clinton Copeland.

"It's probably one of the worst scenes I've seen," Copeland said. "This is a situation that could have been avoided, and it's a very tragic situation."

In that area, Route 210 is a two-way thoroughfare with two lanes in each direction and traffic lights about every 150 to 200 yards. The road is flanked by some businesses but has little traffic in the early hours, Copeland said.

Frick said it's common in the summer for police to deal with reports of motorcycles racing on the highway, which is relatively smooth with long straightaways, but he said they have not had as much of an issue with cars.

"I'm sorry this had to happen -- for somebody to be driving a car so fast and not think to hit the brakes," Gaines said.

John Courtney said his brother, Mark, 33, of St. Mary's County, also was among the dead. He identified his brother from a digital image police had taken.

"He liked going to the race track, watching races," Courtney said. "It's going to take a toll on my family for a long time."

Marion Neal feared her brother also was among the dead and was awaiting images from the police.

It's a tragedy," she said. "I don't like racing, but that was his hobby."

It's all fun ontill someone dies in the END....

this is sad stuff, but it sounds like some of it really could have been avoided, which makes it worse. This just proves how anything can go wrong at these street racing events, even if its not a racer who does the damage.

But this here, come the fukc on. who brings their kid (whom isnt old enough to know whats going on since she had to grab him) and their dad to some illegal street races???????

talk about setting yourself up. Although no body at all shoulda been there to begin with, but the old people and kids should always stay home.

I was reading somewhere they said that there was so many people, that cars that were driving by just started to pull over and watch... They said there was trucks with trailors pulling Cars to race and people figured/thought they'd see some late night action. But either way to have kids outside @ 3am is friggon stupit.....

yeah... there is always going to be street racing especially if money is involved because people can make alot out there on the streets.

No matter how many cops are out there they can't be at every location at once. People will never learn.

I am too scared (you can say I don't have the balls) to street race or really speed at all because my insurance is already high, i don't want to get pulled over, and I think of the what ifs (what if I killed someone, what if I wrecked my car)... I think ahead because I don't want to have killing someone on my conscious for the rest of my life!
