Default New Summer Tire Recommendations

I'm looking to replace my original Pirrelli P6000 after about 20K miles on them and I'm not sure what to get. Any recommendations?

I looking for something with good dry and wet traction
Preferably under $150/tire
To be mounted on 17" P1's
Might use for a few autocrosses this summer but i'm not looking for something too serious specifically for autoXing

How are the BFGoodrich g-force T/A KDW2 's ?
or the Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 's?

last question, should I go 225 or stick with 215?

Thanks for the help

The Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 is a supremely good Summer/wet tire, the sidewall is a bit soft on the edges, but overall it's an excellent choice. The only tire I recommend over it is the Michelin Pilot PS2, but not worth the difference in cost if you're budget minded.

As far as the size, I recommend staying with the same (or as close as you can get) overall diameter (regardless of your application). Tirerack.com can give you all this information .

PS2's are a little bit more than I want to spend (ie. alot!)
I was kinda hoping to keep it under 150/tire

thanks for the suggestions though

Kumho Ecsta MX's were reasonably priced years ago when I purchased my first set of aftermarket wheels, Rota SDR's from Revolution Motorsports. Good tire, a little noisy, predictable at the limit. Not as good as the PS2 in the wet, definitely noiser all the time, especially under decel/braking. Grips pretty good until you get them really hot and greasy.

**Update, tirerack has them for $110.00 per tire! in 225/45/17. 215's afford slightly better gearing, 225's obviously grippier and wider.

anyone have experience with the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A Pole Position's?

they are like 137 on tire rack, which seems reasonable

You could always get take of RE070 from an STI... good tire, and you can come across some really decent pricing.

FK452's a great for their price ~ 120/tire. They are a good tire that preformes pretty well, very good in wet, and are progressive at the edge of there limit.. which is a great quality in a tire Can't say I have autox-ed em so i can't help ya there.

Eagle F1 are one of my favs but at 160/tire they are too much for me. If you can afford em they are great, if not 452's are good.

GL on finding the tire for you.

I'm on my second set of Kumho Ecsta MXs. 225/45/ZR17. MXs have been around for a while but there is a reason for that: it's an EXTREME PERFORMANCE summer tire. I drive them all year long. Some of the very best dry traction out there with well-balanced rain performance. Wet performance is up there with the best all-seasons. Do not attempt to drive them in the snow: it's a "summer" tire. Don't drive them hard in the wet if you are nearing wear bars. A great tire for the street and road for $110 per tire. Fairly light weight tire and a good match for light weight wheels.

For the money and occasional non-serious autox and even track days, the MX is a great tire for the money.

I'm going for a set of Goodyear Response Edge and up-sizing to a 17" rim. 225/45/17 will be the same as original equipment (205/55/16) I believe.
the Response Edge's have a kevlar side wall which stiffens them considerably and they have a triple tread pattern for good over-all handling and are reported to be pertty quite on the road.

my 2-cents.

I was hoping to find more feedback on the Dunlop Direzza Z1's (Extreme Summer tire) which tirerack shows as a near choice to the Bridgestone Re-01r's but at a substantial lower price of $122 a tire 225/45/17.

I think these look to be very good right now as a new tire for me and cost is a big thing since summer tires tend to have less treadlife - overall cost is a factor for me some. Too bad the tires are on back order everywhere until Spring hits.

thanks for the suggestions!

so good reviews on the kumho mx's, huh? I'm worried that they won't handle the wet as well as an "ultra or max" high performance tire (or whatever those adjectives are they use). but it seems like most people like them so I'll keep them in mind

i think i've narrowed it down to the:
Bridgestone re050A pole positions @ $137
Goodyear F1 gsd3 @ $152
Kumho Mx's @ $110

now for a stupid question, I have 215's on there now (7" P1 wheel) will the installer know the correct offset to mount the tires on? what offset should I use? can you even change the offset? do I have any idea or am I clueless as to the meaning of offset?

"The offset of a wheel is the distance from its hub mounting surface to the centerline of the wheel."

I got told by Americas Tire that the Z1 isn't actually out yet, which is why everyone shows it as back ordered.

I just ponied up for RE-01R's. $159/ea from Tire Rack for 225/45/17.

RE-01R are probably the best value for the money.

I'm on RE01R's now. They're great tires for autox, not as good for track, and overkill for the street. For the money, if I wasn't a serious autoxer, I'd get the MX. If I didn't care about the money, I'd get the RE01R's and watch people cuss and grab the oh s**t handles on cloverleafs.
