Default FS Norcal: 1985 Porsche 944

I'm selling the car I used as my daily driver while all my time went into swapping my RS. It is an early-'85 Porsche 944 in pretty good mechanical condition, but needs some cosmetic/interior work.

Asking $2800

A little general info about the 944:

It's a 2600lb, 150hp rear-wheel drive car with a perfect 50/50 weight balance (also renowned as one of the most nimble-handling cars Porsche has ever made). It's a longitudinally-mounted 2.5L inline 4-Cyl engine that drives a rear-mounted 5-speed manual transaxle. Standard tires are 205/55/16 front, 225/50/16 rear. It's a 2-door car with 4 seats, but the back seats are REALLY small. Because it's a hatchback though, it can fit an astonishingly large amount of stuff in the back, especially if you fold the rear seats down. It has power steering, power windows, bottom-hinged gas pedal, front and rear windshield wipers, and cruise control.

The specifics on this car are that I picked it up cheap on craigslist because it had a bad transmission. It started and ran just fine, but wouldn't move. I purchased and installed a used transmission from another 944, and voila, it's been a fantastic daily driver for over a year.

For what it's worth, it's a totally different type of "sports" car from a Subaru. This is a way better highway cruiser, has a really laid-back driving position, and is significantly smaller/lower. It's very clear that this was a car designed from the beginning to offer driving satisfaction without many compromises. This is a perfect entry-level sports car for someone willing to put in some maintenance time, or it can be a perfect platform for building up a really fun track car. It will also perform daily-driver duties for you just as well as it did for me if you want something to drive while you work on your subaru!

The bad:
-Paint is not shiny. Whether it oxidized or got repainted at some point in it's life, I don't know, but it's just not shiny.
-A couple dings/scratches in paint, and two spots with no paint about the size of the base of a pint glass. No rust.
-Unknown mileage. Showed 108,000ish when I bought it a year ago, then the Odo broke, and I've put maybe 5-6k on it since.
-Has a leak somewhere, either passenger door or sunroof I think...but it collects rain in the passenger footwells when it rains hard or you wash it.
-HVAC only sort of works. You can select hot or cold air, but the fans don't work...so you're limited to how much airflow you can generate by driving
-One tail light is out
-Cruise control occasionally turns on at random
-Hatch lid doesn't hold itself open, but all it needs is new little struts. I'll include a broomhandle with the car
-Radio/stereo produces sound, but then I broke the faceplate off...so you'll need a new stereo if you want music
-Front windshield wipers broke in the half-wiped position, and the rear wiper doesn't work because the motor came loose
-Shifter has a bit of side-to-side play, but that's mostly because it's a 5-foot-long shift linkage on a 23-year-old car!

The GOOD! (finally):
-Clean title
-Relatively straight body, ZERO rust
-New timing belt, clutch, and front struts all from previous owner
-New front tires
-New battery
-Passes CA smog without issue, and is reg'ed through Feb '09
-Includes Fuchs forged wheels (a factory option) which supposedly worth half my asking price
-Has never broken down, and has never failed to start
-Engine runs SMOOTH
-Handles great, and really is a blast to drive
-Faster than an RS in a straight line! Maybe even in corners with better tires...
-Consumes VERY little oil
-Holds oil pressure and water temp in everything from city traffic jams to extended highway cruising
-Has a working oil pressure gauge from the factory
-Girls "get" this car more than they "get" a gutted subaru with rocketship thrust
-It's a Red Porsche!

Blue book on one of these in Fair condition is $4,000. I understand that there are several issues, and that blue book isn't always spot-on, so I feel $2800 is a fair asking price. If you'd like to make a serious offer, please don't hesitate to do so in a PM or email. While it's not in dire need of it, I can have it tuned-up (coolant flush, oil change, etc) at your expense to ensure buyers from afar will be able to make the trip home in confidence. Buyers in the bay area who are genuinely interested can come check it out and take it for a drive. Thanks!

Car shipping services do exist!

Also worth noting: I'm willing to work out a partial trade for an unmarried 2.5L Version 2 accessport, or a set of 3 Defi Gauges (Boost and oil pressure must be two of them).

Thanks for the bump.

Hah, SEAN! It's been a while... How's the 'Rex? I'm STILL running your rear swaybar on my RS, though it now has an STI drivetrain in it.

Oh, and a little bump for me.
