Default new engine or atleast auto to manual conversion

i have a 93 impreza and it really has no balls.... what can i do to this car... and please dont say GET A NEW ONE... because thats not in the budget.... what are some cheaper mods that i can do to the car to make it GO... and SOUND nice, too.....

in particular... how involved is changing the car over to manual and where can i find the necessary parts?

also... what engines will fit in this car ideally?

all i can offer is that the auto->manual switch has been covered in the AT/MT Forum. If you do a search in there, I'm sure you'll find something.

get a new one...if you want a noticable increase in power and want to change transmission types, youll be buying a motor , transmission, set of pedals, shifter and hardware...

or buy a wrecked car and trade all the parts over....

or just change motors and keep the auto..
but impreza transmssions are weaker than legacys, they use fewer clutches, due to being lighter and having no power...so you may change motors then loose your tranny in a short while..

the 1.8 you have is 110hp..say you spend 500$ on an intake, cat back exhaust, fancy plug wires...you may get 120hp, but that will only come at the top end, so your motor wont have any more power, except for when its floored...

you can buy a early 2.2 for a legacy, 130hp, with much more useable low end power...they go for around 500-800$ for a good used one

you can buy a later 2.2, with 136 or 147hp, that may be 800-1200$

you can buy a early 2.5 for 850-1300$ or a phase 2 for 1200-1600$..both over 160hp..the phase 2 motor has more low end power..

you can buy an import 2.0 dohc, about 155hp..650-850$...but parts are hard to get if needed

you can buy an import turbo motor,700-4000$ 200-280+hp..

any of these will bolt up to your transmission and motor mounts..it may need some wiring and throttle body swaping...

i bought a wrecked 99rs, with a phase 2 2.5 and put the motor in my 96 impreza, it had a 1.8...It is nice to be able to go up hills in 4th and 5th gear and not shift down now..But I didnt try to convert transmissions, i just swaped motors..and kept the new trans as a spare..but mine is a 5 speed anyway..
