Default first swap. first car

this is a bit embarrassing but this will be my first subaru and first car. i know myself that i cant handle a 300hp car but im looking into purchasing a brighton or a L and swapping it out with a ej257 and all the goodies. good idea?
how come i see so many people getting ej20's? i couldn't find engine comparisons on the stickies so i might as well started posting since i joined for a while.

what mods should i start off first while saving for the engine on the side?

Try to get a base Impreza with the 2.2 . Spend your time on handling and braking improvements (tires, pads, swaybars etc). Get a performance alignment. Then spend money on performance driving school. Last participate in local autocross events. No point in an engine swap if you don't have the accompanying modifications and skills to take advantage of it.
