News A Closer Look: GOTO: Racing Question and Answer

by: J. Chilcott
Scotts Valley, CA 06/16/2008

I received a phone call around the end of May from Chris Lock, one of the drivers for GOTO:Racing. He said the team was going to run their Subaru Legacy GT at Mid-Ohio in the Koni Challenge ST race. The first thing that came to my mind was, “That’s great, I haven’t seen them out racing since their 2nd place finish at Miller. I wonder what they have been up to.” I sat down with Brian Lock and Chris Lock and got caught up with them on what they have been doing since their 2nd place finish at Miller.

Brian is on the road in Kansas right now, so I can answer for him. He no longer drives the GST "L" Time Attack car. He is pursuing other opportunities in road racing(such as testing for TRG this weekend), as well as managing the new shop in Scotts Valley. I am sure you will see him back in Time Attack soon, as well in other professional venues. And I am sure he will always be my co-driver no matter how busy he gets .

Mid ohio update: The trailer seized and axle in kansas! 8 hours later they are on the road again with only two axles and parts on order for the trip home. Cross your fingers for those other axles! We can't lose any more!

I am always amazed at how Brian L is able to keep the Impreza Monster at the limits. I am an advid driver myself and is always looking for ways to improve. I am interested in getting an insight on how he is able drive at that level?

So would I .

On a related note, Brian just spent the day testing at Mid-Ohio with TRG. He did a simulated race with Spencer Pumpelly in the afternoon after spending the morning working with Spencer and Andy Lally fine to tune the setup for the new tire.

This was Brian's first time in either a RWD car or even a Porsche for that matter. But he was running only 1.5 secs off of Spencer's pace by the time they started the simulated race. Both Andy and Spencer commented they had never seen someone learn to drive a porsche that quickly before. Needless to to say, we are very proud.

We had some electrical issues the popped up in qualifying. Without the engine at full song, we started from near the back. Since we had been quite high in the previous practice sessions, we expected to do alot of moving up in the first hour. I think I went from 37th to 13th before the first yellow. I was extra motivated by the hard work the crew did that weekend to diagnose and address more than their fair share of issues that week.

The second half of the race was not as kind. Contact, damage, and lengthly pitstops to address the accompanying issues had us 4 laps down. But I will save the story for the official write up.

I find that it's very difficult for some drivers to switch off from Race mode. So what do you boys enjoy doing to get away from racing when you're not competing?

What is the teams plan for then next five years?

And what is your methods for maximizing the Subaru's AWD system? The short answer we often get is seat time, but without knowing what to work on the results would be the same.

I too am moving on into RWD. And I'm taking some of what I've learned from AWD with me as you sometimes have to drive the Subaru like so.

Chris is forgetting a few sessions in a 350Z GS car last year. But other than that, the only RWD cars that I have driven are the tow vehicles for our racecars .

Wow... What a car! Now don't get me wrong, I will always have a soft spot for Subaru's, but to drive a "real" racecar with proper geometry and the smoothest reving motor I have ever felt was pure driving bliss. The car was so consistent in every corner, not fighting all the diffs like we do in the Legacy. To my surprise, other than throttle modulation, the car balance was very close to our Legacy on track out. Turn in was another story however, and that is where I was losing most my time to Spencer's.

I have incar from the day that I will post up when I get back home, I am still on the road.

Glad to hear things went well. fingers crossed for ya.

I'll bet driving that car was an experience. something like huh, so this is why they always win races.
