Question Dead speedometer...

So, I was driving to work today, and I noticed that my speedometer was bouncing all over the place, I pulled over and turned off the car and restarted it, nothing changed.

On the way home tonight it was doing the same thing, but then it stopped working all together, and a few minutes later my "check engine light" came on.

The car is working fine other wise, but this one has me stumped. I have no clue what could be causing it to bounce around, then stop all together, and then have the engine light come on.

Any help is appreciated.

CN: speedometer doesn't work, check engine light came on. Whats wrong?

The CEL is probably just from the guage not sending the correct info. It could be a sending unit or just one of the parts on the back? Just go get it scanned at the stealership and they can probably tell you what part broke.

most likely your VSS in your transmission is broken, or a wire has been damaged, this would explain the check engine light as the ECU is no longer getting a speed reading. Anyways bring it to an autoparts store, get the code read, and post the results here. Most places do it for free! Likely it will confirm a problem with the speed sensor, but either way we will better be able to help you from there, as they could just be unrelated.
