2002 Subaru

Default Blown Motor/ Help Dont Know Which Direction To Go

Hey Nasioc, I picked up an 2002 Wrx loaded with a few bolt ons: Greddy T518z, 4 Inch core top mount, Full 3 inch T.B.E, and Forge ByPass Valve.
Shes got serious problems, when i fire her up it sounds like rocky balboa breakin ***** with a hammer. So i kno the motor is shot. Now i only have a $2000.00 dollar budget. I havent done much shopping around and yeah. What im here asking is Should i have a local shop rip her heart out and rebuild it or take the motor out my self and send her to a machine shop my self. I know with a shop i would have a guarentee but im unsure about a machine shop. I dont really know what to do so please help me out. also i havent cracked the motor open to see how far the damage goes idk just putting that out there. also if you guys can tell me how much either path is going to cost.


i have also heard about doing a 2.5 swap.but here i am again dont kno.if i found a 2.5 block how would i go about the swap should i use 2.0 heads or should i spend a little more on 2.5 heads, another thing is wiring harness can i use 2.0 harness, another is can i use 2.0 intake manifold with 2.0 injectors, and if i get a 2.5 ecu would i need to get a retune right away with my bolt ons idk help me out guys im lost with this and shes my first subie so i wanna do her right.

Well if you have 2000 dollars to spend I would reccomend you do as much as possible yourself. Im not sure how good you are at turning a wrench but i would say you should take the motor out your self and either take it to a shop out of the car or find some one on the board to help you take it apart and figure out whats wrong. SOmeone in your area might be able to help you for very cheap or maybe just have beer and food and they will come help you and show you what to do!

But trust me i just got 2000 to build my 03 wrx block and the money goes really fast with gaskets you need to buy and stuff. So do your research and see what you can do with your money you got also. call a few shops tell them you have 2k and tell them whats wrong and see what they say. A shop will charge you alot to dissamble and assemble a motor though.

yeah, I don't think you can rebuild an engine correctly on $2K unless you're getting some good deals and have your own garage and can do all your own labor.......that's assuming nothing else is wrong (ie. turbo rebuild?)

add heads into the equation and you'll be way over $2K even if you do it yourself.

If you tell a tuner shop you only have $2K they probably won't touch it.

new short block: $1700
plus gaskets and you're over $2K already
my tuner charges $1500 just to break down/re-assemble an engine.

But, If current SB can be rebuilt......~$400-600 for brand X forged pistons....assume you can reuse rods.....same crank......new main/rod bearings.....~$150....gasket set.....~$300....hone block....~$100......(optional? re-tune.....$300-500)......ARP main studs....$160......hopefully nothing else is broke, and make sure you find out why/how it blew in the first place!!

ALSO, if its also an 02....you really should look at replacing the oil pump, water pump, timing belt, seals for all......etc, etc, etc......do it right!

Timing belt, seals, gaskets, pumps, timing belt pulleys/idlers, new factory head bolts, etc. All of that crap cost me $1200+ in my build.

Your noise sounds like a spun bearing. That means that at least 1 rod and the crank are probably trashed. Rather than getting the crank machined, I would get a new crank and bearings from the dealer. Get the block bored .020" over and get something like this if you want to upgrade, or maybe just get a used good condition rod and new pistons.

Even so, it'll be near impossible to keep it under $2000. Your best bet on that type of budget is to get a good condition used 2.0 motor (complete, not a shortblock) and drop it in.
