i have a 93 leg turbo 4eat 1st 2nd and reverse work fine but when it goes to shift into 3rd or 4th it is like there is nothing there it just free revs. I have changed out the fluid and filter and removed the valve body and cleaned it put the springs back in were they belong retested it works mostly the same but feels like it trys to grab alittle the only thing i havent done yet is adj the band up on the bellhousing. Any help would be greatly appreciated THANKS.

time for a rebuild the "high clutch" not working for some reason is most likely the cause

I know this is an old thread, but I am having the same exact problem with an 04 Outback H6 LL Bean.

This is my first post on this forum, and I think that the 04 has the same exact transmission as this. Was there ever any resolve to this?

So, I went ahead and changed the screw on transmission filter, and drained and replaced the transmission fluid. The transmission still does not want to always shift in to 3rd. This seems to only be an issue after the vehicle has been driven for 10 minutes or so.

When the vehicle is cold, it will shift normally unless under WOT, this will cause it to shift into what seems like neutral, but again its the 2-3 shift. Once in 3rd gear, the transmission does not slip, and I don't see the transmission oil temp light flashing anything at startup (just comes on once then goes out), anyone at all have any ideas?

I am still unable to make my own thread on this since I am a new member... I am fairly knowledgeable with cars, but this is my first Subaru, I am use to working on Toyotas.

Default 4EAT stuck open solenoid

I'm in the same situation, New member unable to start a thread.
Anyway. My problem is one of the clutches or bands applies at start up and won't release. This causes the trans to lock up like it has a drag racing trans brake installed. The trans locks when the selector is moved to R, 2, or 1. The trans will also lock when it tries to upshift if I drive it.
I'm on a limited budget since retirement and don't want to pay to have a technician poke around trying to diagnose a problem if one of you has a solution.
Thanks in advance.

There isn't a quick fix. The tranny will need to be opened up, at which point you'll better off having it rebuilt.

Dropping the pan and servicing the valve body is less $$ than pulling it completely or swapping a used transmission that comes with its own problems.

You'll be super lucky if that's all that's required, but most likely it'll need more work. I'm speaking from experience, i'm on my 3rd 4EAT.

Since I hit the magic number I started a thread with more details.
This problem cropping up so soon after a fluid and filter service makes me believe I can get away with repairs to the valve body since the car wasn't driven after the problem started.
Thanx for your input every bit helps.
