Default looking at 2nd gen legacy for general use

my wife and i have two cars, i have an 08 mazdaspeed3, and she has an 07 civic si sedan.

i keep my car immaculate, which means it hauls nothing except a$s, and she can't keep her car nice with a boxer dog who loves to go to the beach 3 times a week. i'm tired of paying for a car that we can't keep looking good.

so, i need a general hauler to allow us to keep the si clean.

I've been going 'round and 'round trying to find a third vehicle for general purpose use. dog to the beach, hauling stuff, driving in snow, etc. what i've looked at runs the gamut (broncos/jimmys/old vw wagons/etc) and i think an older subaru wagon might be the best bet.

second gen legacy to be exact.

a customer of mine, susquehanna motorsports in PA, swears by these cars, even at high mileage.

awd, manual, mileage in the 130-200k range.

advice? tips? thoughts?

btw, i'm looking to spend about 2k, not more than 3k. i've found a few candidates, but the mileage is always pretty high.

Yeah, its hard to find a low-mileage mint 95-99 Legacy wagon.

The higher performance 2.5 liter motors have an annoying tendency to blow head gaskets.

The more sedate 2.2 liter is "adequate" for normal driving but is no power house... but it is generally very reliable.

Look for rust, or bubbling paint just behind the rear wheels above and behind the plastic bumper cover.

Make sure the timing belt gets changed on schedule.
All of the 2.5 liter and the 2.2 Liters AFTER 1996 have "interference" motors.

Don't be scared of high-mileage. As long as these cars receive regular preventative maintenance they are for the most part highly reliable. Other than struts, clutches, and CV joints, an oil seal here and there, and the like its not unusual for these cars to see 350,000 miles.
