Default OMFG, anyone want a free shot? Go ahead, kick me now

So I was driving to a job interview Friday (remember, I've been unemployed for 6 months). Turned the air on in the car, and got hot air. Looked at guages, temp was pegged on red. Pulled over, and the coolant reservoir hose was out of the bottle spewing crap everywhere. I put it back in, added water, and drove 5-7 miles like that. After the interview, I had it towed to my mechanic. $100, cha-ching.

He called now: radiator had a leak, overheated, blew the headgasket, and might as well do my timing belt and water pump, etc, to the tune of $2500.

Is this reasonable? I'm gonna shoot myself. Especially since I could probably do a WRX swap for $3k.

Ugh.

Now would be a good time to start learning how to work on your own car. I'm sure there'd be plenty of people around that could give you a hand.

If you decided to try to fix it yourself. Do some research and when you think you finally know how long it will take and how much it will cost; double both figures and quadruple the aggravation your expecting.

Bring it to the Subaru dealership in Tyson's Corner, VA. They fix the whole thing for $1800. Wait, sorry, $2200. No, no... actually, there was more wrong than you thought. It'll be $3000. Wait wait wait... you still need just a little more work. $3400. Plus this other thing here. Total bill: $3900.

There was something in there: I'm pretty sure it was that damn additive Subaru requires.

wow, for what?
I inflated the numbers to align better with your story, but what actually happened was (or so they say) the water pump on my 95 Impreza 2.2L froze, snapped a belt, overheated, blah blah blah. They quoted me something like $800 for a new pump, belt, but told me it could be as much as $1000 if I needed a new blah blah blah. Final bill: $1500.

$2500 actually sounds reasonable for a timing belt service, replacing a HG and a new radiator and whatnot.

Why don't you just look around for a 2.5 motor that you can just throw in and it's plug and play? I'm sure you can find one for under 1K considering WRX longblocks are going for a little above 1K now.

Whatever helps you justify the swap man. What year 2.5RS are you referring to? My 2.5i gets better mileage than any WRX I know.

i have never gotten over 24 on the highway. Ever. And i know lots of people who say that. And its well under 20 in town. Ithis is an 02. I read about wrxs getting 27-31 highway. Of course its very poor justification.

A swap will cost you more time than anything. If you have a beater sittin around, go for it. Unless you know you'll be unemployed for a while yet

You can get a replacement engine for cheap, a lot less than what they quoted you at.
It all depends on if you can do your own work or not. I'd say a buddy and I could replace an engine like that in a weekend. I've done it before, and some things can't be done alone. I don't know how mechanically inclined you are. Looking back on my swap, it was a lot easier now than what it seemed when I was doing it. The wiring killed me because I was clueless going into it.
