06 WRX, TD04 tuned by Chris @ XX Tuning with GrimmSpeed Parts. 351 AWTQ!
Cliff notes:
243 WHP from 3500 to 5500 rpms 351 WTQ @ 3100 rpms Got tuned yesterday by Chris @ XX Tuning in East Hartford CT. He smoothed out the boost, made it come on a lot quicker, and stay on longer. He used a new Autocross specific map he's been working on as the shop cars are dedicated road racers meant for top end power. Spent at least 1.5 hours on the dyno and then went for a cruise where he made a few minor tweaks. All in all, we started around 11:15am or so and finished up a bit after 2 pm. Chris said it was one of the highest wtq stock turbo 06's he's tuned. Definitely worth the 8 hour round trip drive. Need to give credit to GrimmSpeed too. He gave me a super deal on a lot of my parts which definitely helped out spool and low end power (see list below). The graph says flywheel, but that refers to the interface between the hubs and the dyno, not the cars flywheel, so it is wtq and whp being graphed. The Graph: On the Dyno: Power Mods: Grimmspeed PnP'd/Blue Ceramic Coated Manifolds Grimmspeed Blue Ceramic Coated Up-Pipe Grimmspeed Blue Ceramic Coated Cross Pipe Grimmspeed TGV Deletes Stromung 3" Divorced Wastegate Down Pipe Maddad 3" Midpipe, catless Worx Tuning 3" Catback Worx Tuning power pulley XS Engineering CAI Ebay Silicone Turbo Inlet P&P Throttle Body Throttle body coolant bypass mod X02 Racing TMIC (gasket matched) Aluminum & Silicone Y pipe, PnP'd Silicone TB Hose (Blue) Aeromotive fuel rails/braided -8AN lines No plans to upgrade the turbo yet. I compete in ESP so I need to leave the turbo/block alone to stay in the class (no PnP the turbo either). Full mod list here: Link

wow that is impressive torque! It's also impressive on how fast and how much it drops at redline. From 350tq to 125tq at 6800rpm . Going to be a monster on the autoX though!

Blown95: Because I could I had a set of perrin rails I got used, but never installed. They were the old style V1's with the old style logo and were anodized black. I sold them for what I bought them for (even recouped on shipping) and picked up the aeromotive rails/FPR used/BNIB for a good price. One thing I always liked about hot rods was the anodized fuel systems. I converted to parallel flow, put it on top of the manifold and increased the fuel line size for more volume (ie, less heat transfer). Also, I pretty much read the rules for ESP, found what I had left I hadn't done, and started picking them off one by one. I also wanted to learn how to "build" part of a fuel system, so I bought the lines and fittings and had fun piecing it together.
Steve: Yeah, the torque drops off rather quickly, but it's still fairly high. Look at a cobb OTS map for a crude comparison. The torque curve looks a lot flatter, but if you look at the numbers it peaks at 271 and drops to 250 by 4300 rpms. My curve holds 250 until 4800 rpms. The stock turbo really gets overrun by the 2.5's potential. Depending on the AX course, I shift by 5500-6rpms. Low end/mid range is what I need. 2gnt: Heck yeah! That's the biggest difference, power doesn't fall off quite so fast as it used to. I guess you could say I have a lot of "worthless" mods that everyone says doesn't add much, but they do add up. My friend had a similar setup minus the TGV's, rails, and the pnp'd throttle body but only got 320 wtq. So, a mod that adds 1% to your power times 10 add's a lot. The cost/benefit ratio just drops off quickly. When building a car for a specific AX class though, you hit the big guys the first year and knock off the little guys as time goes on until you have a nice setup. |

I've got 38K miles on it so far with about 70% of those at stage 2 (not protuned). I'm on the stock clutch and I let it slip a bit when I launch. My first clutch only lasted 30K miles because I AX it a lot (20+ events so far, some of them 2 day events, some with 18 runs ) but I have looked into buying a spare stocker.
Ask my friends though...I drive it hard. When I had rod knock with the first engine I still AX'd on it one last time. That engine wasn't protuned though and had a MAF go bad (root cause of failure). |

Either way, the goal of this car was to achieve power as soon as possible, and hold it for as long as possible. Many typical tunes will have a power curve that increases then decreases, this car makes peak power at 3500rpm and holds it to 5200rpm. Doing this will help him tremendously when he commands power coming out of short turns. Torque is a byproduct of boost, he was tuned at 20psi, and since it's a stock TD04, the little bastard just can't hold that for to long. The goal here was to achieve peak torque and peak horsepower around 3500rpm, this makes for a really, REALLY, snappy car for AutoX. The final result is a tune that is catered to what the customer wants, not just achieve the absolute maximum horsepower the car can deliver. - Chris EFILogics.com |

Chris gave me exactly what I asked for, a quick powerful car for AX that had a strong low end and a smooth middle range. Maybe next year I'll switch turbos, not sure. The TD04 is almost a perfect AX turbo. Yeah, STI's make more power, but their lag hurts them on tight courses. Choices choices. |

Nice numbers, looks fun. I don't see an aftermarket BCS on that mod list, are you running the stocker?

Bullwinkle: I'm running a generic 3 port solenoid. It looks like the perrin, but was bought from grainger. I think the brand is ARO.
Rexwork: It is! I let my two friends (who both own a 2.5rs/i) take turns driving it home since I was dead tired and slept in the back. They enjoyed it a ton! |

wow lol...that thing must hit hard right off the bat! Glad our goodies helped you get that insane lowend that you have.
This type of power will be an awesome autox car but at the same time be a great street car. Good luck to you at the races! Justin |

Meth isn't allowed in any class for AX unless it's an OEM system. Water injection is allowed but I don't have plans for that. Next up is a tire trailer and then probably diffs.

I think it was David Buschur who first proved that an uppipe on the 06's was much more beneficial that previously thought. Turn in Concepts did a writeup about the stock catless uppipe not being ideal. Still a LOT better than a catted one, but for those looking for that last bit of power there were improvements to be made. With that in mind, I liked Grimmspeed and his products, so I went full bore with those. So, for everyone who says that TGV's and uppipes are a waste of time, it all adds up. Plus the blue parts look cool. |

really nice numbers bro. you better start looking for a tranny upgrade ive been running almost identical power on my wrx for 13,000 miles and i just had to have my tranny rebuilt. i sheered 3rd and 4th gear and destroyed a syncro lol. and having all that torque gets a little hairy at the autocross, just watch the tail when it comes around you don't wanna hit any cones lol.

funds are tight right now so i took all my aftermarket parts off and flashed it back to stock and took it to the dealer where they fixed it for free under my warantee. but if it happens again i'm gonna either swap in a 6spd or get some ra gears

I can't do that. I did wire tucks and stuff. It'd be easier/cheaper for me to just buy a used tranny and install that than to try going back to stock.
