Question G-force logger/mapper conecpt??

I just thought of something, but I am not sure if it is even possible to do, so dont flame if something like this is completely unrealistic.

I downloaded the Rev program to my Ipod touch, and put it in my car and started to mess around with the acceleration mode that shows you the amount of forward and side to side g's and I thought of a great concept. Would it be possible to display your driving line based on the about of forward and side G's? Imagine being able to have your Ipod touch/iphone mounted in your car during an autocross event, and log your run, and see the lines taken through the course based on the amout of G's you produce. That is something I think people would love to have a tool such as that. It can be used in any driving situation were you want to see your driving line. You could see how hard you take turns, were you accelerate and brake. But I'm not sure if you could have something like this just based on G-force alone. Without knowing anything about G-force, it seems doable. But is there another variable I am missing to be able log and see the line you drove through a course? Again, if this sounds completely stupid and you think I have been sniffing to much glue or something, you dont have to be rude. But if something like this could actually be made, I beleive it would have a decent size market of people. It would work in anycar becuase you would just need to mount your ipod touch/ iphone and have nothing connected to it becuase of its built in accelerometer. Anyone who could help me out it would be great! I know if you wanted to see your speed/ distance as well you would need something more then just the g's being logged, but those variables I am not concerned with rite now.

There are many dataloggers out there that do what you're looking for, and most of them GPS based. For example: http://www.race-technology.com/description_8_956.html

With the I-Phone, connect the g-force readouts and hook in the GPS capabilities of the phone and you could have something. I know there are others working on this very capability.

Neat toy for now, until I learn to use it enough to actually become a tool.

Some dataloggers are able to use lateral G and steering angle to produce a track map which could give a decent indication of driving line. I know the Motec ADL does this, does anyone know how others like Aim do it?

There's a program that reads the output from a G-Tech Pro RR called SlipAngle. It tries to do what you're talking about. The problem is that unless you can account for pitch, roll, and sliding, you can't use the data to make an accurate 'map'. For instance, it can't tell if the car is oversteering, understeering, or just turning. You can however use it to correlate readings with where you were if you know the general layout. GPS is the way to do it.
