Default 1/4 mile gurus- drag slick question

Hey all,
I have offically fallen in love with drag racing. I don't race, I just watch but I have noticed at the local strip that a lot of rear drag slicks have a white line colored in on the sidewall. Does this measure/do anything, or is it just how the tire is made?

I'm talkign about the thicker line which runs from the rim to the end of the sidewall.

The one all the way around the edge of the tire is there to check the contact patch of the tire. Where it wears off will tell you how much of the tire is making contact with the track.

The one from the rim to edge of the tread is to make it easier to spot wheel spin. When they watch the replays of the run, it's easier to see the white mark turning.

The line on the tire is one tool that tells the pit crew or driver whether the tire is gripping the track properly. It's typically chalk that they rub on the tire before a pass. They can see how far down the sidewall the chalk is worn off to see if they need to add more air, and the line also is an indicator of how fast the tire is spinning. If the line is going around faster than the car is moving, then you have some grip problems, and a power, clutch, suspension, or tire adjustment is needed. This isn't the only way they determine this either. Pro drag race teams use all kinds of data logging and video recording to improve future passes.

As stated before its to see if the tire is slipping on the rim. Then run low air pressures, usually in the 9 - 12 psi range.

Most of the time they drill the rims and put screws in the tires so the chalk is kind of pointless then.

I dont drag race but I have and do run drag tires on one of my vehicles. I can say that 9-12 psi is on the high side for some drag tires since 20psi is the max inflation. I ran 5psi in a set of MT sportsman pros for 2 years without any trouble. Most of the time tubes are run in the tire a long with a bead lock rim to prevent spinning on the rim. I didnt run tubes in mine but never fully heated the tires up either as I blew the rear end out of the truck with a quick shift.
