Default Wrecked Exotics Claims 2009 Hyundai Genesis Coupe Airbags Fail To Engage In First Rea

Quote:
Hyundai's flagship luxury coupe recently experienced its first real world crash. The driver fell asleep and slammed into the concrete base of a lightpole. We can't verify the accuracy of this, but both passengers were apparently badly injured due to the airbags failing to deploy.

On the bright side, the crumple zone seems to have done an exceptional job protecting the cabin and absorbing much of the impact.

From the looks of the steering wheel, I wonder if the driver was even buckled in? Could be that he was just sitting too close to the steering wheel - in which case he might be glad the bags didn't go off.

You guys know I like Hyundai, but I had to kinda grin a bit reading "exotics" and "Hyundai" in the same sentence. I know the sedan got 5-star crash ratings, and I'm assuming the safety equipment and systems are the same on this car.

I remember one of my coworkers telling me a story when he fell asleep while driving his Tacoma, slamming into the guardrail head-on, flipping his car over it, and landing in a ditch (miraculously, the cabin was not crushed). No airbag deployed on the frontal impact.

As an aside, this website in general just makes me really sad.

Disturbing that airbags didn't deploy. On the other hand, I agree that the crumble zone did more than a good job. I guess they didn't put all that weight for nothing.

You mean the ones with blood all over them?

I know everyone's going to turn this into a "Oh look, the Korean brands suck!" fest, but recently I rolled a 2007 GMC Denali 5 times after hitting a guard rail head on at 70mph and not one airbag went off. FORTUNATELY everyone with me was OK (surprisingly minor injuries considering), but still, airbags not working is a major issue.

Its really scary stuff putting your trust in an airbag that you have no way of knowing if it will deploy.

Bags didnt deploy because it was an offset hit. Bags deploy with a decelleration sensor and a few other things.

I am always worried my airbags are going to deploy when I am plowing snow in my Ram.I hit some hard piles of snow but they seem to know not to go off.

Mine was an offset hit as well, but still the deceleration sensor should have tripped them. Not only that but ours was a rollover and the side airbags should have gone off, since that's what they are for. GM claims that the front impact was offset and that there was no side impact for the side airbags to go off but that's bull. Why even have airbags then? Whats the point if they're not going to work as intended when you get in a wreck that doesn't quite meet the exact criteria to deploy the airbags? GM's stance is we all survived so the safety of the truck did it's job, whether or not the airbags deployed. Puh-leeze.

Even though we had relatively minor injuries, what injuries we did sustain would have been almost completely negated by the airbags. As it was people on the scene were surprised we were even alive.

Airbags wont deploy if the seatbelt is not latched and the decelleration has to be pretty dramatic to make them deploy.

If the driver of that car wasnt wearing a seatbelt and the bags did deploy, well then we would have a dead Hyundai owner and someone bitching about the bags deploying.

Side impact bags deploy on SIDE IMPACT. Not on a rollover. Had they gone off while you were in the spin cycle, you more than likely would have a broken neck.

Offset crashes dont deploy the bag because of the kinetic energy the occupants have going diagonally. If you got smacked in the torso with a bag coming at you straight and you are going sideways, once again, your neck is the weakest link. Airbags are not the be all end all, seatbelts save lives.

The seat belt latching closes a circuit, along with the weight sensor in the seat.

Yeah, unfortunately, this is just sensationalist journalism trying to pick on Hyundai. If the airbags didn't go off, it's because they weren't supposed to.

Looking at the steering wheel damage, the angle of impact on the front end and the damage, my money says the PASSENGER did that to the steering wheel and the driver got mangled in the open window/a pillar.

I didn't even know these were for sale yet. I knew the sedan was released in the domestic market before it came here, but wasn't expecting to see a coupe in the wild yet.

I would hope that Hyundai really does have this sorted out. A friend of mine had a 90's elantra where a minor impact caused the airbag to deploy. I also wonder if the assembly lines are any different for Korean distribution and American market, although this seems to most likely to have been caused by the lack of a seatbelt.

I'm curious as to why those who posed concern for the front airbags do so? I have been in quite a few frontal collisions and never had an airbag go off and feel lucky they didn't. I just fail to see what a front airbag is suppose to accomplish. What exactly does it even do for you? It just smacks your face and breaks your nose.

There was definitely a side impact. If not the first time it hit hard on one side, but definitely from several of the other times it hit on the side

And since when were side impact airbags not intended for rollover? Remember when Honda Ridgelines were popping the side impact bags for sensing rollover condition when the "trucks" were just turned hard during magazine tests?
