Default LA Auto Show: Hyundai HED-5 i-Mode Concept

The HED-5 “i-Mode” concept was unveiled by Hyundai at the 2008 LA Auto Show today, highlighting an all-fresh, environment-friendly powertrain making its first-ever appearance for Hyundai. The six-seater family crossover, which was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, merges visionary styling with future technologies and advanced eco-dynamics. The HED-5 i-Mode unveils for the US outlet a first-ever direct-injection powerplant for Hyundai, the Theta Turbo GDI. The 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine utilizes gasoline direct injection technology. By injecting the fuel directly inside the cylinder in small, accurate volumes, the performance and reaction of the engine improve courtesy of the intake charge cooling. Both fuel efficiency and exhaust emissions are enhanced because of the improved combustion.

Merge GDI with turbo charging and the consequence is extraordinary power yield. The engine can generate for up to 286 horsepower, higher than most six-cylinder engines on the market, while enhancing fuel economy by 15-20 percent. The Theta Turbo GDI comes with Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) to improve efficiency even more. This highly-efficient, ultra-modern gasoline engine will be integrated in various Hyundai versions in future model years
The vehicle transforms into an extension of the digital home permitting passengers to stay connected and interact in the car and beyond thanks to the advanced multimedia and entertainment concept developed by LG Electronics. Web access, video games, movies or video phones are a possibility via the pop-down touch-screen displays and Webcams located in the overhead console. A wireless network, cable-free keyboards, game controllers, and headphones personalizes further the entertainment experience.
A ground-breaking mechanism allows the sliding door to be free from the typical inner and outer guide rails. When the doors are opened, the lack of a B-pillar provides a sensation of space and remarkable accessibility to the roomy interior.
Working extensively with new composite materials, the Hyundai design team enabled exceptional and irregular forms. The structural design of the HED-5 i-Mode is backed by an external frame shielding the space within, like a shell. In collaboration with Bayer MaterialScience, the HED-5 i-Mode is the original vehicle to highlight the new “BayVision” glazing system and Collimator headlight lenses created from Makrolon. This ground-breaking glazing substitute enables extended transparent areas, providing more weight reduction.

JL audio might not be too happy about their third brake light design

I think a sportier looking SUV/crossover would do good for honda. Their current offerings are pretty bland in the segment. The CX7, Rogue, Murano, and Tiguan all have Hyundai beat in the design department.
