Not a thud, or a thump, or a bump...
Nope, its none of these. My Baja has started making a metallic "ding" when turning in either direction. You have to be moving fairly well, not just rolling at idle. When you turn left or right, with a little speed you hear a "ding". Just one for each turn. When you turn left, then right, you hear, "ding, ding".
I can't tell if it's coming from the front or the back - in fact, sometimes it sounds like it comes from one end then the other. But, it's hard to pin down. Has anyone developed a similar sound? I have no clue what it might be. At this point I'm not ruling out a squirreled-away chestnut rolling around under there somewhere, but it seems a bit loud for that. Any thoughts? Perry

Is your Baja completely stock? If so a quick trip to midas or monroe (East coast chains) and they usually have a free or discounted under car check. I get an anoying squeak when it gets cold (swaybar bushings I think) but never a DING good luck.

I've never heard a metallic ding sound when making turns...
But there was a time I thought I had messed up my suspension carrying way too much of a load in the bed. After that, I kept hearing a clunking sound coming from the rear end when turning or going over rough pavement, spent a lotta time and money trying to fix what wasn't broken. It ended up being the trailor hitch tongue wobbling around inside the hitch. Removed the tongue and no more issues. |

I had the Baja at the shop yesterday (replacing a new tire - but that's another story) and while it was on the lift I had them look for culprits for this odd "ding". (The mechanic had driven the car and heard the same thing as me).
But, they didn't find anything that seemed to be the problem. Two possible problems - the plastic boot on the bottom of one of the rear springs had shifted, allowing metal to metal contact. That was lubricated as a test - nope. The other and most obvious was a head shield problem. Nothing appeared amiss, but they put a couple clamps on as a test - nope. So, the search goes on. I'm leaning toward a heat shield, but so far, no luck. |
