Default Hatch shocks - help

Fellow VICers, looking for some answers.

So the temp bottomed out around -30 on Saturday night up at Sun Peaks. I get out to the car about noon yesterday to start her up and get her warmed up and loaded. The foam in my seats was hardened it was so damn cold! Anyways, I go to open the hatch to load up my bags and the shocks no longer work. Nothing. Door is heavy as hell and they do nothing to keep the hatch open, it just falls. Had to use my hockey stick to prop it open.

Has the cold done this or is this just a coincidence? They were working Saturday night when I got my hockey gear out at the out door rink but now, nothing. I thought perhaps if they warmed up they might work again but I tried this morning and nothing.

So I ask, are these fixable? Are replacements cheap? Are these still covered? (haven't had time to open the warranty book yet)

Thanks, I am

Call the dealership where you bought your car. Ask them how much they are and if they are covered. I bet it takes less time then it did for you to make this thread.

i would assume the warranty would be 3yrs / 60,000km's
so depending on your km's and in service date, your 06 might be covered.
Replacements should be cheap, in an aftermarket sense. OEM i bet they will run about $75-125 ea
thats just a rough guess on price tho

i beleive they would be a gas filled cartridge and sometimes when they get really cold, the seals shrink and let the gas escape. so it might have been the case with yours....

Typical answer from Ryan, Thanks.

Yeah, I'll be calling the dealership this afternoon. Just wanted to know if they were fixable or not as well

Aside from when I purchased the car, which was a pleasant experience, the rest have been pretty negative. Not a lot of help from parts people. Had the car in for some service and was getting hassled about suspension mods etc. when I was there getting a tail light replaced . Oh well, what do ya do.

http://www.strutwise.com/index.php

The guy is in Surrey, and he specializes in rebuilding these things. I used him for rare parts like hood struts for a Jaguar, and older Ferrari. Not the kind of stuff you can hit up Canadian Tire for. Cost was about $20-25 each, and his work is great.

Just in case you find it's expensive to replace these through the dealer, rebuilding may be an option.

Steve, thanks for that link man. Guy got back to me within a couple of hours and new struts will be in my car this afternoon. $70 for the pair. You can close the thread.

Might be worth putting his info in the VIC Faq's. Others could definitely use it.

awesome.
Glad to hear he helped you out, as he's a good guy. Old british car fan, if I remember right...

Let's leave this thread to die a natural death. That way in a year, some newb won't have any excuse to start his own strut thread.
