Well, like anything a dealer says take it with a grain of salt. He may have had a MBC, poor fuel management, run lean and had detonation and damaged a piston. It is doubtful that the turbo itself was damaged. Dealerships will say the first thing that maked it from their ass to their mouth.

Over on the Brat forum, this one fellow posted about how little a salesman knew about Subaru. The guy could only repeat over and over, turbo charged, turbo charged, the salesman claimed that the U.S. was the first to get the WRX and that it was a new car. The scary thing is that the bulk of the mechanics know as little about Subaru performance as the salesmen do. I have a theory that the less you know, and the more insane stuff you make up (like an aftermarket exhaust causing a head gasket failure) the more likely you are to make service manager.
