Thumbs up EFI Logics

Here is a brief summary of my tuning experience… this may seem long winded but it is the only way that I can get my point across:
I have a 2008 WRX that I purchased in May; by August I had a Tomei 7760 ARMS turbo, Perrin Front Mount Intercooler, Perrin Intake, Invidia Turboback Exhaust, 850 cc injectors and an AVO 255l/h fuel pump. I first used the Cobb AP and a tune that was emailed to me by Clarke to get the car running, the car ran but was not idling well or getting near decent gas mileage. I then took the car to XX Tuning to meet with Chris who is now the owner operator of EFI logics, he tuned the car on the Dyno then had an air flow limit issue that was caused by the AP. Chris contacted Cobb and copied me on the messages, after a couple of weeks I was concerned because I was instructed to not push the car past 4k rpm. I asked if there was a fix for the bug and I was told that there was not one yet but it was coming soon, and that Cobb did not expect to have a modified 08 WRX so soon. After a few more days I asked again and I also asked if there was any Engine Management that can tune my car, I was told by Cobb that “ if you lack the patience to get your 2008 car tuned in 2008 then I should look elsewhere.” So I contacted Jermaine at Turbo XS, I purchased the Utec Delta and drove to Maryland to get tuned… on the dyno I blew an intercooler pipe and the pipe that leads to the throttle body came off so the car was only tuned to 18 lbs of boost. I then made an appointment for 3 weeks later to get retuned, when I arrived Jermaine was working with Lotus’ and he told me that after my 4.5 hour drive I had to go home because he would not be able to tune my car that day. I contacted a number of tuners in the tri-state area and they said that they didn’t want to work with my vehicle because they didn’t have the experience with the 2008 WRX, I had an open source road tune done by Turbo Mike which felt great but I wound up losing my gas mileage and the turbo started to spike in the colder weather.
Finally I contacted Chris at EFI who was able to tune my car using the AP; his professionalism, ability and shop are unparalleled in my opinion… he is the only person and EFI is the only shop that I would recommend to anyone to get any type of work done to Subarus. I now have 346 WHP 377 WTQ and 30 MPG! All of this is thanks to Chris and the guys at EFI Logics.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

glad you got it sorted out, but I'm confused why you're so hung up on the mileage issue. IMO it's a little foolish to make that one of your main criteria.

I'd consider safety of the tune, smoothness, and broad torque curve more important. Not trying to bash you, but it's not a Prius.

It's simple, some people strive to get the most for their money. If they can go to a place that can provide them with a tune that makes good power, and gets them good mileage on their daily driver, then why not?

Sure, some combo's will not net the greatest economy, but for the most part, we can get good economy out of most combos of Subaru's.

Just curious...what kind of AFR's is this at? 350whp + 30mpg...not too lean for the ej255 as far as longevity of the motor goes..? I'm sure the tune is great, but just wondering.

Hey Ryan,

Unfortunately, I do not associate with UTEC's.. Been my policy for over 6 years now, I'm sorry.

Open loop fueling and closed loop fueling are two entirely different things. The car @ WOT is tuned at 11.0 tapering to 10.8 by redline.. But this has nothing to do with fuel economy.

The fuel economy in a car can be much improved with a solid calibration, but the results vary from different driving styles.

Here are his plots:

Boost / AFR

I've found the same to be true. Dumbing down the boost targets/WGDC in the 0-36% throttle positions works wonders for "increasing" fuel economy. I'm glad you're being honest and open about that, Chris.

would you know if the arms 7760 would bolt on directly to an AVO TMIC on an 08 wrx ?

The ARMS 7760 mounts like the stock GD STI turbo, I had to get new piping from Perrin to make my FMIC work. I would imagine that it is the same for the TMIC...

+1 for EFI. I just got tuned to the tune of 241 awhp and 323 awtq on a td04. I had heard their reputation, and viewed the dyno database which is a great setup btw. Bottom line is, its worth a 5 hour drive to deal with a shop you feel more comfortable with vs one thats half that distance. Car feels great on the road and I am pleased with the responsiveness of this tune which is way more responsive than my previous tune.
