I am thinking about making one of these to replace my stocker and I have access to some large pieces of fiberglass that is probably about 1/4 to 3/8" thick. Anyone think this would be choice of material? I would probably coat the topside with some high temp paint or something.

any suggestions/opinions?

As far as I've read, fiberglass may not be the best idea because (like wood) it can splinter and end up doing damage from the shards. Seems like road signs and sheet aluminum are the choice material

Bumping this thread back from a year of silence for a question...

Now that you guys have been running these (aluminum plates) for a few years, I have a couple of questions.

1. Have you hit anything with the plate?
2. If yes, assuming you are using the stock mount points, did the impact do any damage to the mounting points/hardware?

A buddy and I are working to design and build one for my car, and the question just came up. Are we over-thinking this? The design goal is to stand up to both RX and Stage Rallies*. We are planning on 3/16" thick 5052 Aluminum.

* By stage rally I mean that I sometimes volunteer to work as a marshal or controls for RallyAmerica events. This, often times, requires driving the stage after the rally cars have ripped it up. I've seen first hand what this can do to the underside of a car driven at less than 20mph (one friend had a hole punched through his transmission pan leaving a stage at the Lake Superior Pro Rally).

The notch is to clear one of my fmic pipes. I may end up notching the other side too. You can't tell from the pics, but the leading edge is bent up at and angle to minimize damage if I ever hit something.

I don't know how much of a hit it could actually take since I didn't reinforce it anywhere. The first tank of gas with it is showing +1 mpg and it now coasts much farther than it did with the stock splash guard.

Anyone can build one. It's just a flat plate with some holes drilled in it. One thing to watch out for is when you drill the front three holes. They are not symmetrical. I actually wanted the shiny side of the signs on top.
Will probably get flame to revive this thread... Anyway, this is s sweet piece you have there. All of the undertray I've seen do NOT cover the full front tray. Who can perfect these? It would be nice to have an actually functional front splitter.
