Default some pointers/ where to start

i would like to attempt to build an engine. nothing fancy no like 600bhp just something a little faster for my impeza. i dont need to do this build in like 3 months either more like over the course of atleast 2 years. i have the time and spare money to do this. so if any one has any good reading material to suggest about the basic knowledge of a build that would be nice. also where to start, what type of block to get. but im not looking to swap trannys for a 6 speed if possible. just get a block for my 07 2.5i and start from the bottom with the internals and all. maybe 300-350 at the wheels im looking to achieve.

i dont really know thanks for the input and also let me know if im crazy and just wasting my time. my dad is a mechanic and has built motors for many years so i have a good person to talk more about this with but i want some general input. plus he's a 4 hour drive from me so its not like i can call him up and say hey come here and check my motor.

thanks again

hi there im in a similar boat my friend im lookin at buyin a 2000 wagon impreza and initially had the idea of slapping in the wrx motor i recently found out they arent so compatible. and was told i would be lookin at around 5-7k in doing the swap
dont really know what my point is right now jus kinda rambling but man i go through the forum and its overwhelming. im just trying to find out know if the swap is practical now and get some other suggestions on what to do for similar results. or if i should not buy the 2000 impreza if im planin on doin a low budget rally toy im just on a short time line here and have to make a purchase in a few days so that i have transportation. blah blah blah thanks for listening haha.
