Default whats the best junkyard hybrid?

i have a 93 Impreza with the dual port 1.8 that is starting to get tired. It has no torque... Less than normal 1.8 until 3k. It has 270 thousand miles and compression is down between 130 and 135. I know the spread is still in check but its low. I want to put something in there that would be worth the swap. but i am also cheap and don't want to spend much if any on tuning. there are a couple of 2.2s and first gen 2.5s out in the local u pull. i guess what i am tring to ask is out of those block combos what would net me a decent boost in power, be easy on gas and run pump gas and still kinda work with the stock injectors/ecu

I'm not 100% sure, but I think your stock injectors and ECU just won't work with a 2.2 or 2.5.

I can tell you though that between a first gen 2.5 and a 2.2, I'd get the 2.2. The early 2.5's had a lot of headgasket issues that the 2.2 just didn't have. Neither motor will accept a hell of a lot for mods, but both can have some small stuff like intake and exhaust with no problems. I would suggest swaping in a 2.2 purely because it's a more reliable motor.

Those who don't know, should not guess. You can use your Ej18 ECU and wiring to run either an Ej22 or an Ej25. The problem with junkyard Ej25's is that many of them need to be gone through. Finding an Ej22 that you trust is easier. And if you go that route you don't need to fiddle with any sensors or components. You just bolt your intake manifold to the EJ22 engine and go. Just make sure you get a dual port Ej22 and you don't have to change anything.

I went and looked today and i couldn't find any dual port ej22's. is it possible to put the ej18 heads on, or am i better off working over a ej25. I am not really going for the power... too much more might be too torquey for the 2wd. i have also heard that if you get a decent 2.5 head gasket the problems would go away

very STi'd

Just pull the exhaust manifold along with a singleport 2.2 (which will be newer and make more power anyway) and otherwise do what Matt suggested.
