Default Launching a 4EAT (AutoX)

Anyone have any tips on how to best launch a 4EAT for AutoX? Should I stick it in 1st or 2nd?

heheh from my experience to get going the best without neutral dropping (axles dont like that) is to just put it in first or jus leave it in D and hold the break and give a tiny bit of gas the car will want to go but your holding it then let it go and stomp it im pretty sure thats really bad for the car but whatevs your autoxing it anyway so im sure you know what your getting into

Sticking it in 1st or 2nd won't improve your launch. I do advise novices in my region to put an auto car into 2nd so that the trans doesn't upshift into 3rd or 4th gear when they're driving through the course.

On most solo courses, you won't need a big launch (unless you do a pro solo). To do a big launch with an auto trans, hold the brake pedal down with your left foot and press the gas pedal with your right foot until the engine revs come up to the stall speed of your torque converter (~2,700rpms iirc for 4EAT imprezas). When it's time to go, take your left foot off the brake and drop the gas pedal to the floor.

Seems like there have been a number of "how do I launch for autox" threads. My thought is that you might gain a few tenths on the launch, so you'd better be that close to your goal before you even worry about it.

When I see people launching hard, then coming in 2 seconds off the pace, I wonder if they've got their priorities right

Anyway, I guess it's all good fun and that's what autox is about for most of us.
