Default Buying 2004 Subaru WRX Sedan. Any problems associated?

Hey all, new here, been wanting a Subaru for quite some time and I think I am finally gonna get one. The one I am looking at is an 04 WRX sedan, pretty much fully loaded. Has 90000 miles on it, 5 speed with the Titanium shift knob, momo steering wheel with turbo gauge, sunroof, and etc. The gentleman wants 9950 for it and I find that to be a pretty good price. Got to drive the car, suspension feels solid, no noises, motor felt great, a little bit of turbo lag but it went after that. I was a little confused by the burble noise that the motor makes when it is idleing but after some research found that very common with the boxer motors.I crawled under the car and it was somewhat clean, some light surface rust on some things, especially the stock exhaust. The car is 100% stock which makes me feel better that some kid who beat the crap out of the car isn't getting rid of it. The dealer I am getting it from offers a couple warranties and I was planning on getting one. I found a couple minor recalls for the car but I was more worried about the turbo and how long the turbo lasts before it might break. Any thoughts? Also just some basic pricing after I get the car on maintenance that needs to be done. I haven't checked yet but I am pretty sure it will need new spark plugs and oil change and I wasn't sure of anything else. I know the spark plugs are proabaly going to run me around a 100 dollars to get them replaced by a dealer. I am going to get mobil 1 synthetic which I get for all of my cars. Any other hidden costs I might be looking at?
Thanks a ton, all of this information is much appreciated.

There is a ton of information around here regarding all you are talking about. Check out the Unabombers manifesto up a the top. Plugs probably will run more than $100. They are about 10-15 each + an hour or so labor.

Regarding Mobil 1, cruise abound the maintenance forum. Seems like our boxer motor and mobil 1 don't get along sometimes. It is on the thin side of oils and we burn it quickly sometimes. Shell rotella T 5-40 is a good cheap synthetic.

As far as the turbo lasting. I don't think they fail frequently, but you should be able to fine used cheap ones for sale. Everybody wants to upgrade.

Good luck!

well as you will come to find out on nasioc everyone has there own very different opinions of what NEEDS to be done. if i were you buying this car i would get the 90,000 mile service subaru offers. maybe before you buy the car you should get a compression test. but as for the warranty.. you say the stock exhaust is rusty, thats just gonna be one of the many excuses you use to buy a turbo back exhaust and thats gonna void who knows what on that warranty. if it were me i wouldnt buy the warranty. subarus are reliable..

i wouldnt worry about a turbo. and even if it did happen to go out you can upgrade to a vf39 for cheap

I think your price of 10k is fair, I bought mine for 11 in december with 78k miles on it. He was asking 14,500 for it but i got him talked down to 11k + T-T-R

Welcome to the Suby world

if you can swing it get a 06-07.

04 wrx problem is that it has a 2.0 liter engine. newer ones have 2.5.

all the difference in the world.

-Wouldn't worry about the turbo life. You can get a used TD04 (stock turbo) here on the forums for around $100 when it does go out.

-Might want to re-think your M1 decision....just do a search. I used it in mine once and the engine noise scared me off of it. Drained it after a few hundred miles and haven't had any issues since using pennzoil platinum.

-Careful thinking it's 100% stock...I thought that too when I bought mine. It was not the case. It was heavily modified and returned to stock condition.

true... i thought my car was "stock" when i bought it, i think they old owner returned it to stock....

5,000 miles after i bought my 04 wrx i spun a bearing and had to buy a new longblock, now my tranny is going out.... with all the fixes to my 04 i could have afforded an 06/07 and should have done it!!

One thing I was warned about (I'm about to buy an '04 WRX as well), is that the transmissions are kinda weak. I'm not sure if that means they easily screw up if you're too aggressive on the tranny, or if that means they just tend to go after awhile, but there it is. It's not a big enough concern to scare me off.

The 04 tranny is strong enough if you arent a douche and drive sane. It has a refreshed gearset from previous years. Again, it is all in the driving.

That's good to know! I plan on taking it easy on this '04 when I buy it, and the previous owner certainly didn't hammer on it, so hopefully I won't run into any issues with it. The mechanic I took it to for inspection said the trannies were weak and often lost the lower gears, but I was hoping that was only with aggressive / poor usage of the tranny.

The 04 interior isn't as nice as the 05. 4-spoke steering wheel, crap. Cup holder in front of vents, crap. Wheels same as bugeyes, crap. Black ground effects, crap. Sorry, I am a little biased.

I actually really like the Momo steering wheel and shifter knob. I think they're better than the Suby stuff. The wheels look nice, as well, although you're right... the cupholder is complete crap.
