Default Ford invests $550 million to produce global Focus and battery-electric Focus

Yesterday, we reported that Ford will be investing a total of $440 million in its Michigan Assembly plant backed by a $159 million credit from Michigan state. FoMoCo today released in an official statement confirming the report saying that it will invest a total of $550 million to transform the Michigan Assembly plant from a large SUV factory to small-car plant.

It also confirmed that the next-generation Ford Focus, built on a new global C-car platform, will begin rolling off the line next year. Ford said that the Michigan Assembly plant will also built the battery-electric version of the Focus, the company’s first all-electric passenger car, in 2011.

The Focus BEV is being produced in partnership with Magna International and features a high-voltage electric motor powered by a lithium-ion battery pack. It can be charged by plugging in to a 110-volt or 220-volt outlet and provides up to 100 miles on a single charge

Ford said that the Focus BEV is just one part of Ford’s promise to deliver four new electric-vehicles in the U.S. by 2012.

Is it me, or does just the site of the American Focus make you somewhat nauseous.
