Default Crossing the border with used car parts

Hey guys

Does anyone have any experience picking up used parts in the states, then crossing the border with them? I cant find any answers on the cbs website. I wonder what I need in terms of documentation, and what I can expect to pay in terms of gst/pst/duty.

Any help is appreciated

edit: I am spending about 450 US on a catback, and I have a customs record from an episode at the border when I was a teen, since I have been allowed to cross again I don't play games, always honest and up front with the border guards.

and they wont let you bring it back into canada without a price or receipt either........for christs sakes if you dont know what the **** you're talking about dont pretend to....

what you need to do is to have the person who sells you the part make a bill of sale for you. Just have them write "I sold such and such item for XXX$ to your name"...have them date it and sign it, and if they are willing to put down a phone #.....

also if you organized the sale on a forum, print out the for sale thread and any PMs, if you paid with paypal print out the paypal receipt

but yeah, the more documentation you have the less likely they are to give u hassle, but at bare minimum you need the bill of sale, otherwise they will not let you bring the part across the border. no exceptions

I've had help from the guys here on this one

Just get a bill of sale from the guy as jeff says.

The border guys won't hassle you as much as you think for used stuff.

3 weeks ago we brought up some tires with a used bill of sale and the border guy didn't give a hoot.

sometimes they just let you go....i've had them make me go inside and pay tax on a 50$ part, and then i brought my 600$ header and up-pipe across a week later and they didn't even make me go inside....lol

make sure if the part is made in the USA they dont make you pay duty, you will still have to pay tax but there is no duty on car parts made in canada, USA or mexico.

maybe try it again in english?

but for real man, you're "advice" was pretty misleading and to me it seems like you were trying to say that without a receipt he'll be fine and wont be charged tax....

Paperwork is your friend when bringing something across the border. the more paperwork you have showing the price you paid, etc... the less they *probably* will hastle you

Thanks Jeff54. Id trust someone who brings things over and back enough to have 2 trips down and back in a week to have the right info.

Jimbo123 - maybe try to explain what you mean about no receipt no problems?

I think if you tried this move, they'll just look it up on the internet find what it retails for and charge you taxes on that amount even if its used. If you don't like it, you'll be driving away without your part.

But yeah Jimbo I'd like to see you try your way of bringing used parts over.

I was in Point Roberts on Friday getting some door cards i had shipped there.Told the customs guy they were used, and had paper from the seller with the price (not the price i paid mind you) with his name and number.
Gave it to the guy, he looked at it, gave it back and said "have good day"
you definitely need a receipt, When i went down a few years I forgot i had a set of Perrin Stout mounts in my trunk next to the spare tire, they were brand new in box.
I declared and gave a receipt for what i bought, but they decided to do a check. It got ugly, they threatened to impound my car, accused me of smuggling, etc etc. course i was pissed so it wasn't making things better.
I fluked out and phoned home and was able to get the receipt faxed into them, but i was there 2 hours.....

So bottom line...have a receipt, and don't lie to them

They will look up the price on the internet and use a reasonable estimate on what the tax would be. If you have a Paypal receipt or something, you're not allowed to look it up at Point Roberts. What happened when I once forgot my receipt was I had to go home without the part, they got the part appraised, and then I came back to pick it up.

However, there is a place to print stuff from the internet 10 minutes from Point Roberts I hear.

I had to go to an internet cafe in Point Roberts to print my Tire Rack receipt before They wouldn't let me back into Canada without it, and it didn't come with the tires.

That's odd. I was bringing a part over (at Pt. Roberts) and I didn't have a receipt. When I told the border guard I paid using PayPal, he got me to log in to the PayPal site on the computer at the counter and show him the transaction record. *shrug*

I have brought used parts across 4 times in the last year . Had a bill of sale and got no heat at all . First time the boarder people were bored so they charged me sales tax or something like that was $20 .. the other 3 times they did not even want to see the bill of sale .
