Default AC Expansion Valve not sitting Flush

I'm replacing the expansion valve on my 02 wrx. Is the valve not supposed to sit flush with the lines?

Honestly I've never looked at one from that side. Everyone I know always takes them out from the engine bay and bolts them up and calls it a day. Evac and recharge if NPF and ship it.

Is the new valve OEM or aftermarket?

Exactly how hard was this to get to? I've heard super pain in the ass and I've heard yank out the glove box and there it is.

It's an aftermarket one, my stock one failed.

It wasn't too bad. I had to remove the glovebox and the blower motor. I think the biggest pain was wiggling the blower motor out of the way.
