Default Mazdaspeed 3...How are they?

Well Im probably gonna need a new car in the not so distant future and through my best friends wife, I can get a 2010 Speed 3 fully loaded for 24k. I know a couple guys on here have one, so how do you like it? Whats the good and the bad? Any known problems coming up on the Mazda boards?

She has a normal 3 fully loaded Gran Touring edition and its a really nice car. That interior with some decent performance is very tempting. Im just worried about going back to FWD. But I drive FWD Impalas at work fairly often so I do have a bit of experience with driving a FWD car fast.

If you like a car with the biggest stupid grin on it, get a 2010 MS3. Personally, I think Mazda dropped the ball on this recent redesign.

If you want to know about the MS3, PM Kahunaking. He's got some awesome stories involving seized motors, motors falling out of the car and other MS3 recalls.

And why would you need a new car? Isn't your WRX still pretty new? Clearly we pay our officers too much if they've got money for MS3's and badass muscle cars! (kidding of course)

You're forgetting about something catching on fire because the bolts in the DP came loose...

It's become a pretty popular car, the speed3. I have a speed6 and love it, not the same car, but same powerplant minus my awd. With a few simple mods I was able to make the car do what I want. If you like torquesteer, the speed3 is all you. I would call it...a roll patrol car, esp. if you go big power on it. They were and still continue to have issues with number 3 going out, but that may be fixed now on the new cars?

Well the mazdaspeed 3 is overengineered for sure. Its a nice car. But My neighbor has one and he has one of the first ones that came out and it has been a nightmare. With 1800 miles on it cylinder 3 had the wrist pin break and leave the piston stuck at the top of the motor so the car ran with only 3 cylinders and it took Mazda over 4 months to find a motor to put in it. Then after they did that the transmission began to act up. We put an aftermarket motor mount in it to fix the way that 3rd gear would seem to wander when the motor and trans shifted forward between shifts which turned out to be the best thing we did because there is now a recall on the cast aluminum motor mounts that break and have motors literaly fall out of the car. On his car the steel dogbone one on the bottom caught the motor so it only destroyed the radiator and minor things.

All that been said I still like the car and he does too but hopefully they have some of the bugs worked out in the '10s since the motor is a straight caryover from the older ones.

The interior does kick the hell out of anything offered in the impreza lineup. I guess with all the money saved on AWD, they could afford to make it better. I'd go as far as to say the interior was awesome?

But I still maintain the redesign is awful. It's a mix between a vibe/matrix and a new STi. No joke.

They took as many lines as Subaru took from the original MS3 when they designed the third gen Impreza.

How cool would it be if Subaru followed this hole industry trend with the domestics where older classic designs get modernized and relaunched.

I'd love to see a GC again. Or a modern 22B 2800lbs and all. I'm a little tired of the whole hatch craze.

Its a nice car with a lot of aftermarket support nowadays but there just a very labor intensive car to mod because there's no room to work. We hate doing downpipe installs on the speed 3 and 6s! I would say get in and drive one. I think you would be very surprised of how well they perform out of the box.

Lots more room to work in the 6 than the 3, you must admit....

I've been thinking about getting a 2010 speed3 for the wife. Personally, i like the new redesign! Seems most of the current speed3 owners hate it. I've read some recent reviews and they've all been really good.

I traded in my 02 wrx wagon and bought an 09 ms3 and love it now. I wasn't sure about the handling until I did the Prescott to Jerome 89a drive (so much fun!) There seems to be power everywhere, and while there is torque steer, it hasn't ripped the wheel from my hands or anything...
Although I like the handling stock, I am strongly considering a rear sway bar. I will keep mine at stock height because there seem to be issues with lowering them on the stock shocks. And I wanted to keep the car stock performance wise, but you can't at all hear the turbo with the stock airbox, and I really miss the sound...but it's a great car!

You will not regret it. Zoom Zoom may be a stupid marketing slogan but Mazda truly does design it's cars for the driver. Having owned 2 WRX's and a Legacy, I can tell you my Mazdaspeed3 is the most rewarding to drive. The Speed3 certainly deserves all the accolades the media has given it. The brakes are brilliant, the steering perfectly balanced and the torque the engine bangs out at the bottom of the redline is amazing considering the engines displacement. The only flaw I find with the Speed3 is the chassis get unsettled on really bumpy roads. But it is not that bad.....the 2010 has addressed all this anyway. Sadly, the nose of the 2010 is just so over designed...ok, its just downright ugly. It's a pitty because my 09 is brilliant and the 2010 is even better.

All of the major problems were fixed after 07 models with the exception of the pcv system which just got fixed for us 1st gen owners recently. The problems associated with this car are way overblown. Its nothing even close to the 09 wrx engine problems. The majority of the cases involve guys improperly running mbc's, piggybacks, ap tunes, etc...They just don't bother to disclose that info so they don't look stupid. Someone always finds out later though.

I've been running mine tuned with the AP for a while now with no issues except some rattles and my rotors wearing unevenly.

Apparently they are incredibly fast because there was a guy in one trying real hard to get me to race him a couple months ago when I was with the missus in the FXT. Sadly, that is my only experience with them.

They are quick, but not fast.

Still not bad. My girlfriend really wanted one after driving my buddy's 2008.5 (?).

Well I test drove the new 10 on Thursday and was pretty impressed. It only had 5 miles on it so we didnt flog it to much but its got some decent power and handling. I almost forgot what torque steer felt like but was quickly reacquainted with it. LOL. Overall I think its a hell of a car for the money. The base model (24k) that I drove had an interior way above the WRX. But I believe, still havent driven one, that the 09 WRX will have better performance. Coupled with the insane pricing I can get, this might be my next car.
