Default futher prove that subie drivers are smrter

Quote:
Authorities have sent 37 speeding tickets to Dave Vontesmar, claiming he'd been captured each time by speed camera. Dave denies he's at fault, saying he doesn't resemble the monkey driver portrayed in camera images.Police claim to have done surveillance on Vontesmar and observed him putting on a monkey mask before hitting the Arizona street, proving without a shadow of a doubt he's at the helm of the distinctive Subaru, thus the issuance of the many, many tickets. Faced with the evidence, Vontesmar responded, "Not one of them there is a picture where you can identify the driver, the ball's in their court. I sent back all these ones I got with a copy of my drivers license, and said, 'It's not me. I'm not paying them.'" Ballsy. It seems to us the police have a case for one of the traffic tickets, if it were issued on the day of their surveillance operation, but all of them? While this might seem like a technicality, one is innocent until proven guilty, even in traffic court, and unless police can prove it was Vontesmar who donned the mask every single time, it seems he's got a point. Maybe instead of relying on unrepresented tax collection systems speed cameras, police should, you know, pull people over and alleviate that burden of proof. [Pheonix News]

why didn't I think of that

Hah, I saw this in the morning, but couldnt find a good thread to throw it into. I love the excessive decalling, you'd be hard pressed to have a twin.

Smarter? The guy has 37 tickets and is wearing a mask which hampers his vision. Sounds more like an idiot to me. I imagine we will change our tune when he doesn't see the kid running out in front of his car...or something similar. And he has a butt ugly car.

I'm not sure, but it sounded like they might be fixed speed cameras... like in England, or Japan (Clarkson driving the GT-R with his own face mask comes to mind)

It's on the freeway and apparently buddy only put it on when approaching the cameras, not driving with it on all the time. He's got a giraffe mask too! But yes, still an idiot with an ugly car.

does anyone have details on why when I saw it on the news they say only 24% of people pay for these kinds of tickets? I came from alberta so I know about photoradar and you just pay it as the ticket is issued towards the owner of the vehicle regardless

u guys remember when we had photo radar up, circa 2002?

It was absolutely mental where they would put these things, such as on SW Marine drive right before the speed limit changes back to 50 from UBC.

I swear they created more potential accident situations than deterring speed related infractions.

However our friend in the mask has 37 (!) of these tickets. I have sped through intersections and such and "earned" 3 of these camera tickets MAX. This guy is coming across a bit planned, especially while wearing the monkey or giraffe(?) mask.

If it is not him wearing that mask, then who the heck is stupid enough to let someone else drive their car while acting like that?

Part of me says "good job, this is funny, i hope you get away with it, fight the power!"

The other part of me says "waste of time, not worth it and you look stupid...and also the rest of our subaru community."

I dont think his actions will bring about any change.

There's a bit of context you guys aren't aware of...right now there is a huge PR battle going on between phoenix residents and the DPS regarding the cameras on I-17 etc. Remember that article about the guy attacking a camera with a pickaxe? Yeah, same road.

Most of these cameras are located underneath or right in front of dark underpasses which generally makes a huge traffic hazard as people jump on their brakes or look to the side as they go into the dark area of the road. EVERYONE here is wearing dark sunglasses. On a drive down to a mall I go to in phoenix I go past at least 8-10 cameras every time....some are fixed, some are in movable SUV's. It would not take very long to get 37 tickets.

This guy is not just doing this to avoid the tickets but to make a mockery of the DPS photo radar program. Obviously it's planned. Who would think they could avoid identification driving a car with exposed plates and vinyl decals down the sides? There are several sources for up-to-date photo radar location in phoenix, I'm sure the guy just marks them off on his GPS or something and has his mask handy. Somehow I doubt he drives across the city with it on.

that's a pretty cool shirt.
I'd hate to be wearing it through a roadblock or something like that though.
